depends on catergury. there is 4 a,b,c, and d.
a = fire, to be crushed b = chassis damaged bodyshell to be crushed c = cost of repairs outways value of vehicle, repairable assest, insurer decided not to repair. d = constructive total loss, repair cost close to vehicle valuevalue person requested it be deemed beyond economical repair.
Cat d you dont need to tell your insurer cat c may need a vic check and a new MOT aswell. Most companies dont mind but like you say some lik enorwich union do put a load on.

A "Q Plate" is issued if the original vehicle identity cannot be found.
Kit Cars are a classic example.
If its a catagory c then you have to apply for a VIC Check, only then will the registration documennt be released and then you have to get it MOT'd & Taxed.
Catagory D does not need this.

you find a lot of sierra cossies have a q plate because they have been stolen had the VIN (vehicle identification number ) ground off so they cant tell what the vehicle is on any database, then when its recovered it has no identity so the dvla give it a new one and slap a Q plate on it.

there is universal salvage Salvage Agents click me on the left click on repairable salvage then click chester. will bring up all the insurance write offs from the chester branch. think norwich union use them and a few others. We dont (directline) we use NSA ventures. but i dunno if they have a site. Or try Another brakers yard but i dunno what they are like for buying complete cars.
