I want to terminate my monitored service with ADT. The alarm was purchased outright by previous owner of my house. I have received a letter from ADT saying that I will have to pay them to visit my house to reprogram to stop it dialing out or alternatively I have to pay them to disconnect the alarm.I have paid them a small fortune for monitoring over the years and actually hate adt so do not want to pay them another penny. Does anybody know of any alternative to paying ADT.
Thanks for any advice.

IMHO the first thing to do is ask for a copy of the contract with your signature on it. If there is no signed contract then tough on them, if there is then see what the termination terms are and how long the contract was for.
Have a chat with citizens advice or if you have free legal help included with your bank account, professional membership, house insurance or similar then you could ask them for help, they sometimes assist you with writing a snotagram with suitable wording that means "up yours".
A sneaky way find this out is to phone AMCO and hint you are thinking of changing your contract from ADT to AMCO (who are half the price) but state that you need to know how to cancel your contract with ADT, with any luck they might tell you.

Thanks dd. The contract is terminated but unless I pay them to reset the codes the alarm is useless.Appreciate your advice

Google the make and model of the alarm. There may be a reset code / engineer code.
Or
Price up a new control panel as all the other components are pretty much universal.
I don't know the ATD set up on there control boxes.
So just check online if you do pull the line that calls them, would the alarm be redundant.
Check your contract.
As its unfair to terminate and leave you with unless equipment. I can understand a exit fee if your within say 12 months but it sounds harsh what your describing.
Its one thing to have a service contract and another for the maintenance of the equipment.
In a nut she'll your being held to ransom which does just seem wrong full stop.
