hi all, looking for a bit of advice regards head unit, the problem is....

when the ignition is on radio and cd work fine, backlight, station ID all show, start the engine all is lost, no sound, station ID, or cd, the only thing lit is the backlight, turn engine off and it all works again, head unit is wired correctly using an ISO connector, no damaged or cut wires, thanks in advance....

sounds like you have no live connected that keeps the memory as the ignition switch cuts auxilliaries to ensure power to the starter.

I thought that but even if car is started first, then radio turned on all you have is the back light, no display details, no station ID, and CD will not play, forgot to mention this is not the factory fitted unit, it is an aftermarket one....

Could it not be a bigger problem, ie your alternator?

I'd suggest checking with a multimeter what current you're getting on the two 12v lines that supply the radio, they're usually red and yellow.

One will be a permanent live that keeps the memory settings, the other will be a live that's only on during ignition.

And if its a Peugeot or Citroen, you're supposed to disconnect the battery and do a BSI reset when changing over a stereo.

Its just a theory but: no engine running = vehicle powered by battery.

As soon as you turn engine on all electrics powered by alternator.

Dodgy alternator = no electrics.

So if it had no electrics how would the car start? If the alternator was faulty it would not charge the battery. Not the alternator for sure, just needs the wiring on the radio sorting.

yo

if its a sony head unit you need to join the red wire to the yellow and the yellow to the red, they are the opposite in a vauxhall, vauxhall is red to red and yellow to yellow.

LET US KNOW WHAT MODEL YOU HAVE

Oh and ignore dragons comment if you dont want to risk burning your van and tools to a messy pile of ash and rubber.

one wire is memory and one wire is main (ignition on) power which is switched.

connecting both to the same mains supply defeats the object or the manufacturers would of done that in the first place bro wink

Do you still have the stock radio to try?

And if it is a Sony, to reinforce what Ste posted, its worth looking at the diagrams in the boxes marked A, B & C on page 2 of this PDF:
