From a clean install ive ran updates for about 5hrs with reboots.

If your sure its not right.
Remove the battery and power lead if the power button will not turn them off.

You can use system restore if there are problems to roll back before the updates.

You dont say which version of windows your using.

All updates are essential.

If you are using Windows 8.1 then you will need all updates from Microsoft to get further updates such as the long awaited 8.1.2 which is due for download next month via Microsoft store.

Microsoft are set to release Windows 9 to Windows 8.1 users as a free upgrade next spring.

If a reinstall has been done then updates can take a long time but an up to date PC will update every patch Wednesday, which only a couple a most.

Is it related to the Aug 15 patches that Microshaft have now recommended need uninstalling ?

If you can get on the net - search for 'Microsoft August 2014 updates' - it says to uninstall 4 of the updates from this patch.
