Was Norman Tunna, the Birkenhead railwayman who won the George Cross during the Second World War, related to Charles Tunna, who used to have a barber's shop in Borough Road, Birkenhead? It's quite an unusual name, so it seems likely.

Info about Norman Tunna here ...

Thanks for that, Bert. I often used to pass Charles Tunna's barber shop in Borough Road and the name rang a bell when I read about Norman Tunna.

I wonder if he was related to Ron Tunna who was a groundsman at the Oval in Bebington until he retired about 1987 or 1988 I think. He would have been born late 1920's or early 30's.

Ron was a nephew, Captain.

The son of Normans brother Albert, Ron was born 1929.

Thanks for that Bert. I worked with Ron for a few years. Nice guy but blind as a bat!

To see what might have happened - have a look for Soham railway disaster - which involved a smaller train.

The bravery of this man was amazing.
