Wonder if anyone can put my mind out of its current torture..am trying to recall the name of what was truly classy greengrocer's in the late 1960s early to mid 1970s up grange road west, towards Grangemount, on the left there? Any help most welcomed smile

I seem to remember it was Ainsley's? And you're right, it was rather a good greengrocer!

The premises seems to have sustained a greengrocers business a long time.

Counting back from the nearest visible number, its probably the CFC place. I can't remember what the greengrocers looked like, but I'd bet, nothing like today, how very sad.

Opposite the end of Cole st is 61-63 Grange rd West (1950 map)
In the 1916 directory and the 1967 telephone book its, Stubbs, Baker and Confectioner.
Could that be the place?

Hi folks smile thanks for the wonderful information Ainsley's indeed! It was an amazing shop and the quality of veg and service was superb, my Mother would use no other in the town..As to the bakery, yes it was Stubbs, they did really yummy custard pies, regarding the meat-pies there was only one place for them, Dashley's in Oxton Road? While Stubb's were good nothing came close to Dashley's,really juicy too! The other baker's was Hurst's, which from my corroded memory was located down Claughton Road, near that Convent? They were noted for the quality of their bread smile Bert special thank for coming to the rescue with the amazing information, greatly appreciated

I Remember Ainslies as you do it was next to the Red shop that sold lovely cheese and other groceries.Stubbs bakers was a double fronted shop and next to it was Reeces bakers, also continuing down Joan Turners hairdresser, Gough the butchers There was also a chemist I think it was Whites. Birds fruit shop was on the end with windows in grange rd west and Westbourne rd,there was a Clarks shoe shop on the opposite side of Westbourne rd.Do you also remember Scotts the grocers. The Oriel newsagent.MacKensies Electicals, Beno dorne Tailors.Little Theatre, Contessa ladies underwear. GAS showrooms. All of the shops were lovely and clean and exteriors were always swept by the shop staff and swilled down.Ellisons wallpaper shop.Jones the Butchers Hintons butchers Waterworths. They all were always busy.Loved growing up in the 60s and living in the town
