HI I had a multifuel stove fitted professionally 18 months ago into a recessed chimney and had a black granite surround and hearth fitted to complete the look, the inset is plastered and painted white, so looks lovely, we intend to have the fire maintained this year with chimney swept and replace glass etc, however the plaster behind the fire in the inset has now cracked, just wondered if anyone had any ideas what I could cover the inset with, I was thinking of maybe tiling or fire retardant boards, Steel sheeting!! Is it just a case of filling in the cracks and repainting it, Does any one have a stove fitted?? What have you got behind your fire.

Because of the extreme temperatures you'll need to either render with a sand / cement mix with lime or else skim with a fire retardent plaster, after scraping back the area that's shelled. The latter is not cheap, I think it's about £50. Vitcas. Should be able to get it on eBay. there's always the chance that these will craze, though. For best results you should just fix a vermiculite board to the area. Again, try eBay. You can get it in brick pattern, reeded, or plain. It can be painted also. Be careful when cutting though as it's very fragile. The panels in your fire are made from vermiculite. Hope this helps.

He has fitted two fires for me and I recommend him.

K Thanks Kamikazi Sounds like you could be talking about same shop in seacombe, King street is that Seacombe?? However we are really pleased with the fire and the job its just the plaster cracking. Will pay a visit to blackwood as they been recommended before. Thanks again.
