Reports from the Echo and Wirral News that a fire is raging underground by the old Bidston Dock.
FIREFIGHTERS have warned people to stay indoors and keep medication with them if they have breathing difficulties as they tackle an underground fire in Wirral.
The fire service is using a 35 tonne excavator to tackle a deep-seated fire underneath peat and compost in on land in Wallasey.
Merseyside Fire Service are digging up the land and pumping water on to the fire on land near Wallasey Bridge Road.
Three fire engines at the scene, and Paul Murphy, the fire service's district manager for Wirral, said: “There is a deep-seated fire in peat and compost at a location to the north of Birkenhead. We are aware of the situation and are monitoring it.
"Our High Volume Pump, based at West Kirby Community Fire Station, has attended the scene to carry out further examination and as part of an assessment on the water supply in the area to deal with the fire.
"We are working with partners to assess and decide on the best way to tackle the situation.
“We are not aware of any reports of any people experiencing ill effects from this fire. Smoke may contain substances that can irritate the lining of the air passages, eyes and the skin.”
Cheshire & Merseyside Health Protection Team has advised that respiratory symptoms can include coughing and wheezing, breathlessness, phlegm production and chest pain. People with asthma and other respiratory conditions should carry their medication (such as their inhalers) as usual.
The fire service has advised people, if affected by the smoke, to stay indoors and keep doors and windows closed.
Motorists who have to travel through the smoke should keep windows closed, turn off air conditioning and keep their air vents closed.
Anyone affected by the smoke or concerned about its impact on their health should call NHS 111/ NHS Direct 0845 4647.
