The former Mayalls decorating shop in King St, which closed earlier this year, is being refurbished.

The rumors were that Tesco bought it to knock it down, possibly holding on to the site to prevent a competitor buying it.

However, over the past few months, workers have refurbished the roof, fitted new walls and a disabled ramp to the building. The car park has been dug up and relaid to a base coat surface, ready for a new top when work is completed.
As to the intentions of the new owners? Well, this week a statuary notice advertising the application for a liquor licence has appeared on the fencing. Application made in the name of Tesco, for sales of liquor to 23:00 at night.

That's bound to have an impact on the small traders around there and might even increase the petrol prices next door due to loss of trade.

Just what Wallasey needs! Another Tesco! It's sad that so many of the local shops have closed down. How many greengrocers, butchers, fishmongers, bakers etc are there left now? Faceless national chains just don't have the same character or sense of community. And they just drain more money out of the local economy.

i agree,no atmosphere in the big shops, but guess we are all a bit guilty of one stop shopping, we are all sad about the disappearing high street, maybe we should support our local area more as you say butchers are a rarity now,but i miss the localbakey with there yummy cakes lol.

Dodgshon's bakery on Magazine Lane in Wallasey is great. Small family bakery that sells lovely cakes and bread. Very dangerous to pay a visit there! Haha!
