My husband is doing his autobiography. He is looking for any pictures of the old Railway Road / Canterbury road Flats in Rock Ferry if anyone can help. Have searched the internet, but no luck.
Sorry I haven't got any, but I'm going to keep My eye on this topic. Where flat right next to the post office sorting place ? You might ask in the lukes the Bedford hotel, chances are one of the old boy's are still alive.
Have some pics of the flats in the late 1950s/early 60,s but not sure how to put them on here ! Will have a go in the next few days . Please check back. May have to seek help in putting them on.
Thanks Littlestan hat will be great thanks. If pics are on your computer, click on reply and click on upload manager and follow instructions. Can even pick up if you can make a copy even.
Two pics here showing local kids with Railway Road flats in background. Think these taken in 1958 or 59 . You or your siblings might even be in the pics ! Please acknowledge.
Hi Littlestan, Thanks for the photos, will show them to my husband later when he gets up, this will help him as he has been really ill this week, he has been left disabled by MRSA from an operation, and has parkinsons disease, we are trying to keep his mind active by doing this autobiography, and he keeps mentioned Railway road flats and also chatham road. Took him few weeks ago to railway road and he got upset that it has all been knocked down and rebuilding on. If you have anymore photos of Railway road or Chatham Road would be grateful, just to help his story and memory. I will show him the photos you have sent through to see if he is on there, and will let you know.
Hi Littlestan, have shown the railway road photos to my husband and the picture of the flats show his actual flat with the mangle on the balcany. Also in the other photo we noticed one of his sisters where sitting with the others. I have marked them on the photos.
we moved to canterbury rd flats in 1972, i was 8 at the time they were happy times i can remember everyone from our block they were like family we all played in the square at the front and over the railway field is were we built our dens before getting chased away by railway staff. sorry dont have pics just good memories x
Hi - glad pics have been of interest to you. I am the lad at the back with the bike! Some of names of families which i remember in the flats were David Lloyd (who walked with a bad limp) Danny Conlon & family, Campbell family inc. David and sister ( possibly twins but may be wrong). Old Mrs Williams lived in the other side of the block shown . She had been in Nelson Road until they were demolished and was a kind old lady with a strong Yorkshire accent . Do you remember the sorting office in Railway Road ? It had a huge metal post-box set in the wall. Crowds of postmen used to ride out on their bikes to do their rounds. What is the name of the girl you have marked in the pic. and can you or your father name anyone else in the photo ? I think the Campbell girl may be next one to your girl.
Hi Littlestan, My husband is currently in hospital, but took him in a print out of your last reply, and he is writing down some more names while lying in hospital. I will post them sometime this week.
Hi Littlestan Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, thinks have been a bit manic. Anyway here are some names from Railway road. Danny Conlon and family lived above us. Mrs Bailey was below us. Mrs Lewis and family lived on the otherside. Mrs McDermott lived in the next block with family. Her sons Johnny and Frankie. George Rose lived in Canterbury Road. Remember the post office swing on the lamp post. Played in the allotments over the railway rails. Dad worked with Dickie Holden coalman and delivered coal to flats and houses.
