Executioner Pierrepoint.
Autobiography by the world's most famous executioner, Albert Pierrepoint.
Another re-read job! Not the most cheerful of subjects, but a fascinating insite into his life. He was the third in his family to take up the "craft" as he called it. He carried out over 400 hangings and then resigned as he could no longer come to terms with capital punishment.
Maybe not the book for you if you are feeling a bit down!

I've not seen the film Rude, but certainly recommend the book. It'll be interesting to compare the two. When I was a nipper, my Mum & Dad used to take me to Blackpool on the coach. Coach stopped halfway at a place called Much Hoole (on A59). Opposite the caff was a pub called the Rose & Crown. Albert Pierrepoint lived there. My Dad always said "The Hangman lives there - you'd better behave or he'll come over for you!" The ultimate threat !! ha.ha.

The film was very moving, was able to see 'the man' behind 'the executioner'.
I always find books to illustrate 'stories' much much better.
