He didn't thumb lifts at all, but did accept offers of a lift to the edge of towns to resume his walk north.

One of the few books I've read of late that is difficult to put down. Highly recommended !

I have just finished 'Memoir' by John McGahern. ISBN 0-571-22810-0.It is one of the most beautiful and sad books I have read.It is the story of his childhood,his love for his mother, her death,his father's anger,his discovery of literature.McGahern's description of the fields and quiet roads of Co Leitrim and life in 1940/50's Catholic Ireland, life of hardship on a farm and police barrack life is well worth reading.
McGahern called 'Ireland's greatest living novelist' by Observer and 'as close as we get to Proust' by Guardian. He died in 2005.

Now reading 'A History of Wales' by John Davies.ISBN0-713-99098-8
'The greatest book of Welsh history ever written' Dafydd Elis Thomas-Hansard, Parliamentary Debates.
