On 9th November at 19:30, Keith Fitzpatrick-Matthews will be giving a lecture entitled "Baldock and the end of Roman Britain" Free to members or £4 for visitors...well worth it for anyone interested in the shadowy world of Britain soon after the fall of the Western Roman Empire.

Synopsis:

We tend to think of the end of Roman rule in Britain as ushering in a series of catastrophes, often characterised as the collapse of a civilisation. While some places in the west – most famously Wroxeter – seem to have lingered on as centres of Roman culture for several centuries, it is generally accepted that eastern England was thoroughly devastated. Excavations at Baldock, in North Hertfordshire, suggest that the picture is a lot more complicated, though. Here, a well dated sequence of fifth- and sixth-century deposits, features and burials has been found that have the potential to transform our understanding of the shadowy processes by which lowland Roman Britain became Anglo-Saxon England.
