My mum had trouble with one of our dogs chewing stuff when he was left in the house alone, she started getting 'cow toenails' for him to chew... they're revolting but they did save her a fortune in doors, carpets and sofas  I think 'Bill and Bens' the pet shop in Birkenhead market used to sell them, they weren't very expensive and lasted ages ( acouple of weeks)... it might help a little until you manage to get a cage.
