A HOTEL had to be evacuated after a guest’s cigarette set fire to his bedroom. Eleven people where forced out of their hotel rooms at Dunsandles, a Victorian hotel in Rowson Street, New Brighton, at 2.15am today. Fire crews from Wallasey arrived shortly after and sent men in with breathing apparatus to extinguish flames. Proprietor Alan Johnson, who has run the boutique hotel for eight years, said: “We had a small fire in one of the bedrooms after a guest accidentally set fire to something with a cigarette. “All our systems worked fine, the fire alarm went off and we got everybody out. “We are still open for business but we are going to have to seal up that room for a few days while we air it out and replace the soft furnishings. “It was more smoke than flames.” Source

Not sure about a hotel being "a public place" (mmm.. not sure about a lot of things come to think about it) BUT most hotels have a "No Smoking" rule with notices everywhere.
I think the hotel could ask the guest for a load of money for renovation, loss of income etc. (Maybe?)
If I was the hotel owner, I would not be best amused.

To the best of my knowledge you can still get smoking rooms within hotels, but I may be wrong. I always ask for non-smoking anyway.

Hi There
I think hotel rooms in the UK are classed as Public Places and are therefore No smoking areas - this, when I was a smoker (stopped Dec 12th last year but who's counting!) used to have me hanging out of windows in the past!
Any hoteliers on here to confirm?

You can only smoke in the bedroom/room in a hotel. No doubt this will change soon.

Ste, you may think smokers are disgusting but I think people who drink are disgusting! How about that for generalising! You never see smokers fighting each other in town on a Saturday night - cos they have had too many smokes! You never see smokers running up and down streets kicking wing mirrors of peoples cars - cos they have had too many smokes! You never see smokers killing people whilst driving their cars - cos thay have had too many smokes! You never see smokers in domestic or child abuse - cos they have had too many smokes! You never see smokers sitting in A&E on a weekend covered in their own vomit and blood - cos they have had too many smokes! You never see smokers breaking into peoples houses to fund their next smoke! Have you ever seen a smoker vomit or piss in the street - cos they have had too many smokes??
If smokers are disgusting then would you find it less disgusting to be paying another 10p in the pound in tax if everyone quit tomorrow?
Dont persecute smokers turn your disgust to drinkers or drug addicts, cos they are the ones who cost the country, and the tax payer, money! They also put a vast strain on the NHS with A&E clogged up because they are pissed or drugged or have fallen over because of alcohol or drugs.
Sorry if I have ranted but comments like this really get me wound up! Yes I used to smoke and I will defend any smoker his/her right to smoke instead of living in a country where we persecute people who smoke LEGALLY but turn a blind eye to the smackheads and pissheads who ACTUALLY do harm to other people.
Rany over.....................

Anyone remember the bradford city football fire from years ago, inoccent people died cos someone just dropped the ciggerette on the floor instead of putting it out properly.
Anyone remember the kings cross fire from years ago caused by a smoker who killed inoccent people trapped underground , killed by the smoke caused by a ciggerette.
yeah a would say smokers are as bad as drinkers

To the best of my knowledge you can still get smoking rooms within hotels, but I may be wrong. I always ask for non-smoking anyway. I did think that it was now banned inall hotels but in March we stayed at The Holiday Inn and they have a whole floor of rooms for smokers.
