Nice cars mate but I would be dubious about spending that sort of money on a ford with 100k on it diesel or not. I'd much rather get a car say 2 years older with a lot lower mileage on it if it was me.

Thanks for your advice. So you would go a year or 2 older with less miles?

My guess it that its been a company car. It got all its stamps, and is in that 3-4 year old bracket. Prolly trudged up and down motorways. Go have a drive and see what you think - 100k on a car that age isnt what 100k was 15 years ago

The price advantage of diesel over petrol is'nt there anymore, petrol is the cheaper fuel. To gain in terms of mpg you have to clock up a lot of miles. I personally had a car with the tdci engine and suffered with a lot of engine problems, fuel system related.Be aware that whilst they are economical, diesels tend to be very expensive to fix WHEN they go wrong. Do more research, google for a website called honest john for more info, it lists a lot of info both good and bad.

For lower cost of ownership I would not hesitate to buy a ford focus over any german car, especially bmw. Just as reliable, if not more so, cheaper parts, insurance and the 1.6 tdci had amazing mpg. I can get over 80 on the motorway. Agree with some points above, if you doing les than 50 miles a day, maybe worth going petrol. I have owned several japanese and german cars and ford is just as good.

I'd have to disagree. I've owned 2x Focus, a French piece of shite and a 3 BMW's in the last few years. My Focus was newer and lost more money over the same period than a slightly older BMW.
BMW was a lot more reliable.
Also, in my opinion anyway, a lot more important is the way that the car drives. Taking a BMW out is fun, great to drive. The Focus ended up feeling like a chore at times.
Good cars, but the links I posted above will be far more exciting ownership prospects than anything Ford at that price range.

Each to there own I suppose. Focus wouldn't be the best selling car every year for the last ten years if it wasn't a great car. I personally would try and get the 1.6 tdci without the dpf. They seem to hold their value fairly well

They seem to hold their value fairly well Fiesta was best selling car of 2010... and 2009. But, never mind. 3 series came out 8th in 2009. The reason that the Focus sells so well is due to it's relatively low cost from new. The fact that a 2004 BMW 3 series is a better car than a 2008 Focus for the same price means nothing, and statistics seem to miss this out, as they can't account for it. If you gave me a budget of £8k for a car that would suit a family, cost as little as poss to run, be fun to drive, be reliable, comfortable and have some good build quality... then I'm 100% certain that a BMW would come out ahead of a Focus. Remember, I've owned both, i've owned a number of models from both marques. An older BMW is a better bet than a newer Ford.

The cost of the car itself isn't the only point to consider though, look at parts and labour costs. Most Fords can be worked on at the roadside (are many are, especially when it's raining ) but BMW's tend to require either main dealer or specialist workshops. I had a few BMW's (mainly 7 series) and they did nothing for me, I think I'm just a Jaguar fan at heart, but the Ford Focus did suprise me. Now I'm not by any stretch a Ford fan, but we aquired some some TDCi estates for use as Organ Transfer Vehicles (Ambulances), and although we hammered seven bells out of the engines they refused point blank to break down, the servicing costs were minimal and the fuel consumption gave far more mpg than anything else we've driven. I have to admit that they are a boring drive, and if you want to throw the car around mountain roads and "feel" the road, then it's not the car for you. If you want to go from A-B, get there, have excellent mpg, and not have to worry that someone is going to key it (some people really don't like BMW) every time you park it in a strange location, then the Focus is an ideal car for doing that. Just my 2p worth
