finally got through to sky after 5 hours on hold, they say, the whole of the UK sky broadband was of, due to major outage, but lappy still wont connect, so am going to format and reinstall windows

That sounds a bit drastic to me. The problem MUST be fixable on the machine "as is". I have seen the girls in TheDrs place achieve wonders with a few taps on the keyboard and I am sure Mark can guide you in the same way

Whoever you spoke to lied, I'm on Sky and not had any problems.
Not sure why you're formatting the machine to fix a dns issue, you'd be better off uninstalling the wireless device and reinstalling drivers for it. That way you're starting fresh without the format.

finally got through to sky after 5 hours on hold, they say, the whole of the UK sky broadband was of, due to major outage, but lappy still wont connect, so am going to format and reinstall windows I'm with sky and it's only ever went off the day I got it, cos I didn't put the fillter in, but it's work great now. when was it off as i've been on it all night and most of today.

Indeed, formatting the thing and re-installing Windows is a bit drastic! 99% of Windows problems are fixable, one way or another, and 99% of the time, they don't require a re-install! If you want me to take a look at it later, bring it with you.
