Does anyone know if there is a list of monumental inscriptions for Birkenhead? Wallasey library holds one for Rake Lane and Wallasey church burials, does Birkenhead library or anywhere else have them too?

Can anyone say if the reference library is closed at the moment?

Thanks

Which particular cemetery do you want inscriptions for?

Many, but not all, are available on microfiche at Birkenhead Library. I have a list if you want me to check for you?

Records of burials, but not cremations, are held at Birkenhead Reference Library.

Records of Burials and cremations at Landican, Flaybrick and Frankby are held in the cemetery office at Landican. The amount of help you get at Landican will depend on who is on duty at the time, and how busy they are.

The friends of Flaybrick have a database of inscriptions which they will look up for you (£5 fee involved), visit their website to request a lookup.

If you know that the grave you are looking for is definitely at Flaybrick, be sure to give details of the deceased person's religion as well as the date that they died.

Not so simple really. I have a list of eight names and they all died in Birkenhead. One says Wirral evidently but probably the same. All are 20th century so some or all could have been cremated.

The Wallasey list has them in an index which is alphabetical so it is fairly easy to find them providing they are buried and do have a stone.

I am doing this on behalf of a guy in Malta (no fees involved, just a favour) and thought perhaps the monumental inscription route might be a starting point.

I've got a feeling that the reference library is closed due to refurbishment which is a pain as I am off this week and it would have been a good time to visit.

I understand my friend in Malta has contacted Landican but they can only help him so much.

The earliest one I am looking for is 1940 and the latest 1972. I'll get there but it is just knowing where to start. Thanks everyone.

I think Birkenhead Library is still open (despite the scaffolding outside).

If you go upstairs they have folders on the shelves which index many of the burials from different parts of the Wirral. Once you have the references you should be able to take it from there.

Also many local libraries hold regular Family History help-desk sessions, usually about once a month. If you look on the Wirral Libraries web-site you might find if there's one which you can get to.

According to their web-site the Birkenhead Library is open downstairs, but the reference section is closed for just this week (see Home Page).

As somebody else said earlier, Wirral Archives should have most of the indices, also.
