Hi,

I wondered if anyone can tell me if they know of a Joan Wynn Lived in Biknehead. She used to own a pub (I have been told the Victoria lodge in birkenhead) In the 1950s/60s

Shes was my great Nan (God Rest Her soul)
And I would love too see if anyone has any information on the Pub or any Photos?

The victoria Lodge is at 83 victoria Road and in the 1950s/60s was owned by the West Cheshire Brewery Co. The Licence Registers show the following Wynnes as licencees:

William Wynne 3/8/1938-11/6/1941
Alice Wynne 11/6/1941-13/2/1946
William Wynne 13/2/1946-at least February 1963

William and Alice are listed as married, so it seems that the wife took over running the pub whilst her husband was away during the War. The Registers unfortunately don't go beyond 1963, so there's no mention of a Joan Wynne, but I would guess that she may have been William and Alice's daughter and took over the licence when her father died?

Marty Fred cheers for the information
I'm not sure about an Alice - I know Joans husband was a William though? I think I will have to ask around the Family on who "Alice" was!

Again cheers!

Perhaps Joan's full name was Alice Joan - the licence would have been recorded under her first name, even if she was normally known by her middle name?

Your Nan must have married into the Wynne family. I've found William Wynne marrying Joan Broadhead in Birkenhead in 1946. They seem to have had four children - Barbara (1947), Margaret (1951), Joan (1955) and William (1960). Do any of these names mean anything to you?

It could be that this William Wynne was the son of William and Alice who marty99fred identified, and could he have taken over the pub from his parents in 1946?

Good thinking Batman! It's possible that Alice took over the running of the pub in 1941 following her husband's death, and that the second William was their son.

You're welcome. Would you like me to do a bit of digging on the Broadhead side of the family? Why not put some entries into the new Genealogy thread under the Wirral info forum?
