Hi, does anyone have any information about Lowe Street Mission, I believe it was off Conway Street in Birkenhead.

Lowe Street was a Methodist Mission i.e. a daughter church of a larger one nearby-probably
Brunswick, Price Street. Lowe St. was opened in 1878 . In a survey of 1947 it is reported as
having seating for 173 people and being in a " poor " state of repair . It is possible there are some written records left of Membership and Committee Meetings etc and i think they are held in
the County Record Office at Chester. Has that answered your question ?

Lowe Street was indeed off Conway Street, between Bentinck Street and Exmouth Street, roughly where Exmouth Way is today. The mission was actually called Birkenhead Methodist Chapel (Wesleyan). Built in 1878, closed in 1958.

hi maisie tis your big cousin here our nan used to go there every week and so did i to sunday school there, have you not asked your mum about it she shouild remember something ?

Yes thank you littlestan. Just what I need, records my great grandfather was a Lay Preacher there, just need some sort of written confirmation.

i have a copy of the Guide to the Cheshire Record Office and can confirm that they have the great majority of records for Birkenhead Lowe St for 1858-1957 . Birkenhead has only limited items
for more recent years when it comes to Methodist Churches. To confirm your ancestor being a
Lay Preacher or Local Preacher you need to see the Birkenhead Circuit Quarterley Plan .
This is literally a list-issued every 3 months- of which Minister or Lay Preacher is speaking at
which church . They usually also give a list of all the registered/qualified preachers in the town
or Circuit area with their Home Address and phone No or other contact details . Ask for whichever
year you think your ancestor was preaching. Cheshire County Record Office is at Duke Street,
Chester CH1 1RL Phone 01244 972574 E.Mail is [email protected] Always best to ring
before going to make sure they can get the right records out for you . Small fee payable.
