Wilson st
I think the green mark was a derelict house and behind it was a field we called the bombie
I lived just by the swings

Bulls Head was number 87
Butchers Arms was number 90

No other pubs on the 1891 census but there was one called Durham Ox? on the 1881 census at number 92 Jackson Street which was the only one on the street at the time of the census

Hope that helps smile

thank you LisaW
sorry but can I ask you what are the highest numbers Jackson St goes up to in the censuses.
I didn't know you could do searches by street
I have 1881 census on cd and can't only by surnames

trying to find a map covering Jackson St with house numbers on.
I think Durham ox and bulls head may be same pub possibly
(can you check who lived in them 1881 and 1891 please)

In wilmers 1916 street directory there are only even numbers going up to 88 - no odd numbers.
All those below Blackpool Street (wasn't that the lowest point in Birkenhead once?)must have been demolished sometime between 1891 and 1916 to extend the gasworks.
Looking at the map there doesn't seem to be many buildings
on the Birkenhead Town station side until below Blackpool St where the pub number is 87

change that to Durham ox and Butchers Arms
The inn marked on map must have been Butchers Arms

Here's the O.S. map from 1904/1910. Quite a difference. A lot of demolition has taken place & the gasworks has been moved & Mollington St. sheds have been built.
