It's barbarric to put children through such stress at age 10/11 Well if it is any consolation, they only printed those that passed and if memory serves, the school they would attend? Comprehensive schools are not ideal but at least everyone gets a fair chance. With the eleven plus, kids who were late developers or had childhood illnesses that made them miss school were written off usually. In my case it was the latter. To be honest though, my parents probably couldn't afford for me to go to grammar school anyway. Yes a very unfair system!

I failed my 11 plus, but enjoyed what I feel was an adequate education at St. Georges Sec. Mod. in Leasowe Road. I started work at 15 & went to nightschool at Wallaset Tech Coll as well as day release at Birkenhead Tech to continue my education & I did OK & have now retired. As for "Stress" at age 10 or 11, I don't believe we understood what that meant then!

Has anyone heard of the 13+ - can't recall it being an exam I seemed to have passed that and was allowed to go to the BI from Hemmy starting in the 3rd year, then moving from 3B to 4A.

I remember the 13 plus, i was either told to or asked to take it and refused, when the 11 plus came along i had no intentions of passing it, whether i could have done or not, i wanted to go to a school that played football as well as rugby. All the grammar schools as i remember it only played rugby. The stupidity of a 11 year old i now think.
God help us, Come yourself, Don't send Jesus, This is no place for children.

I have to say that life isn't all nice and fluffy - it's bloody hard work. Prepares them for the life ahead of them. The only pressure they're under is to be able to read and write, which sadly, many can't. I have my own ideas on why but will keep them to myself. School and exams are part of life, deal with it! My results were posted in the paper. I'm the only member of my family to have gone to a Grammar school and until recently, the only one to have gone to University.

Of course it did you no harm, you passed! Good for you but not everyone is as developed at ten/eleven as you obviously were. "Deal with it"? Jeez are you a Yank?

Slightly off topic. In primary school, in the early 80s, our desks were in three rows. A, B and C. Even aged 10 or 11, it was easy to suss out why? Clever. Average and Under achievers. How bad is that?

It would have done me no harm had I failed the 11+ either! Life is competitive and can be hard so I don't see the problem. As for being American, no.
