Liverpool hotter than Los Angeles as temperatures soar - but Met Office says it won’t lastSUN-worshippers soaked up the rays with temperatures in Liverpool topping those in Los Angeles over the weekend.
According to the Met Office temperatures soared to 24.8° in Crosby on Saturday and 20.6° yesterday – also hotter than Boston, Melbourne and much of the Mediterranean.As the mini-heat wave hit parasols were propped up along beaches in New Brighton, Crosby and beyond. And Liverpool ONE took on a tropical feel as revellers splashed around in the water features and bronzed themselves on Chavasse Park.
Andy Bodenham, forecaster for the Met Office, said: “We had some high pressure for a day or two which has allowed the air to become increasingly warmer. And we’ve noticed that as temperatures have got hotter .”
But Mr Bodenham said the BBQ weather is on its way out.
He added: “Temperatures are going to drop by 8-10° over the next day or two as cold air comes in from the north, so it will feel more typical for this time of year.
“The hot weather isn’t set to return in the foreseeable future. It looks like we’re going to be stuck with more average temperatures for the rest of the week. There is still going to be sunshine, so it’s not all doom and gloom, but it won’t be as oppressively hot and sticky as it has been.”
The warm weather wasn’t welcomed by everyone as rescue teams battled two grass fires yesterday.
At 9am firefighters were called out to a blaze near Formby Golf Club. It took them almost three hours to tackle the fire which destroyed 400sqm of grass land. A spokesman for the club said: “No one was hurt. It was nothing too extreme.”
In West Kirkby firefighters were called to several blazes near the monument at Grange Hill. A spokeswoman for Merseyside Fire and Rescue said: “We were called out to grass fires in that area a few times throughout the afternoon. It’s quite common for this time of year.”
