I think this engine may have been going to Birkenhead Docks
What route would it have taken to get there
Where were these engines built

Vulcan Foundry/loco works was at Newton-le-Willows (I think). Presume they headed for the East Lancs Rd. (Newly opened), Scotty Rd. Into the tunnel. Leave via the Dock Branch (tight fit maybe), then head towards whatever dock the ship was leaving from ?

Just found it... look up 'Gated roundabouts' in search, March 09.

Looking at the Vulcan website, I reckon that the loco is one of the following:

1949-50 Works No. #5750-5833 4-6-0, 5'6" gauge Indian Government Railways. (84 loco's)

Certainly 4-6-0's and they look wider than standard gauge. Good work !

Vulcan didn't appear to build many 4-6-0's (other than LMS & LNER versions), and the scene looked 1950'ish.

I'm surprised at it going through the tunnel - as they don't let heavy vehicles through now !

Perhaps that's why !

The trailer that the engine is on in the top picture was owned by Edward Box and made by Scammell. It was later owned by Marston Road services and perhaps then to Picford's. There is one in the Leyland museum.

As a totally useless aside, did you know that there was another heavy goods moving company called "Siddle", they pulled out of the business, reversed their name and now make "Elddis" caravans.

This looks like the same type (HPS) of loco with a different paint job, on the E.Lancs Road.
