This is actually a nice example of a kissing gate.

"FU*KING HEATH HEATHER" Those Victorians where so foul mouthed!.

A couple that I remember - I wonder if they're still there:

at the end of Greenheys Road (Wallasey) where it turned into a footpath to Love Lane (past the allotments) there was an ancient sign saying 'No Thoroughfare'

at the top (Wallasey Road) end of St Alban's Road there was an old Hackney Carriage sign (where the bus stops are/ were!)

Also, I remember when I was very young (late 60s probably) there were some great drainpipes on the big houses on Ashville Road as it cut through Birkenhead Park! The things you spot! Wonder if they (or the houses) are still there?!
