Having just got the bad news that one of our cars cam belt has gone and has caused £1600 worth of damage (it's a renault scenic y reg), we are now down to one car, a 2 litre passat (02 reg). Can anyone tell me how often this car's cam belt needs changing? It was done Nov 2007 along with the water pump. How long till it needs it doing again? It has done 25k between the cam belt change and now.

Give it another 25 bud, but you can leave it up to 60 without worry.

tbh it was my sis-in-laws boyfriends garage  Can't believe he quoted that figure without suggesting a new engine-not impressed

Anything is better thn 1600-was considering scrapping the renault but with the scrappage allowance scheme in full swing can't imagine getting anything for it without buying a new car.

Depending on the damage you may get away with just fitting a 2nd hand head rather than swapping the whole motor

I got the low down on what needs doing:-
cambelt kit £100
water pump £ 65
antifreeze £ 10
camshaft pulleys £170
head skim(?) £200
bolts and gaskets £ 65 total parts £610
labour 15 hours
Is this reasonable for a snapped cam belt with 3 out of 4 valves gone?
