davew3 : From your description of the location, the concrete plinth is indeed the base of the platelayer's hut. Spent nights in there before the track was lifted. Used to go ferreting/shooting around there a lot at that time. The plinth used to have the remains of the small fireplace on it - on the north side. I recall the hut surviving (with some slates missing) until the Wirral Way was made.

The plinth is made of roof type concrete, not base type though

Yes, that in the pic would appear to be a "roof". I thought the platelayers hut base was a different chunk. Getting confused as I'm officially an old git today (65). Working my way through piles of slippers, cardigans and pipes !! ha.ha. Oops... NURSE !!

I agree - that looks like a roof - no evidence of anything ever been built / placed or bolted on top. A roof for what ?
