Does anyone know why it was called the twenty row?

There used to be a row of old small terraced houses with a pub on the end. As the pub was on the end of 20 houses... so the pub was named 'The Twenty Row".

Anyone know when the original Twenty Row pub was demolished?

As a kid I remember being taken for a "Sunday walk" with my grandad. I was quite small and a lot of the journey I would be carried on grandad's shoulders. The route was down Wally Village and then along the shore by the Derby pool, down the lanes onto Leasowe Rd and (inevitably) then on to a pub where I would sit outside with a bottle of pop & a straw while grandad was inside.

With that route logically the pub had to be the Twenty Row

According to Noel Smith ('Almost an Island') the original pub opened on 29th May 1835 and closed on 8th April 1957. I think the new pub opened the following day as it had been built alongside in the Wallasey Terrace gardens.

Great photo. Is it taken outside Derby Bathing Pool?

That date of '57 figures fine. By then I was 15! It will have been 1943/44/45 when grandad used to take me for walks. He died in 1954 and was very ill for 2-3 years before that.

Yes, the photo was taken in front of the Derby Pool baths

There's a real danger that the left will drag Britain back to the 1970s, with secure well-paid jobs, ample housing, properly-funded NHS and social care, free tuition, student grants, final salary pensions, affordable rail fares and fabulous films and music. David Osland 2025
