A 'Wirral' team took part in the 1977 series of It's a Knockout:

I was in Oldham to see Wirral coming second (Oldham won with 28 points, Wirral was second with 22 points and Wigan were third with 21 points, Oldham went on to be second in their heat of Jeux Sans Frontières.)

"The thirty strong 'It's a Knockout' Squad (pictured above) have been recruited by the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral, Department of Leisure Services from nearly 300 applicants who attended recruitment sessions at the Oval Sports Centre, Bebington. The Squad have undertaken an intensive training schedule under the supervision of Team Capta'in, John Oxton, who in addition to being Manager at the Oval is also a senior coach of the British Athletics Board.

The Department of Leisure Services operates and manages a diverse range of leisure amenities within the borough which has a population of approximately 355,000. Facilities in the area are many and varied and include 6 leisure complexes, 7 indoor and 4 outdoor swimming pools, 4 municipal golf course, 3 theatres, 25 libraries, 2 art galleries and museums and over 3,000 acres of public open space including 2 country parks. Wirral are delighted to have been invited to participate in the 1977 series of 'It's a Knockout' and look forward to an exciting and enjoyable afternoon in Oldham."
