The Bidston Hill Hotel about 1906:

[Linked Image]

It was known locally as the 'Ham & Eggs' and was later renamed the Bidston Hotel.

I wonder if the Ham and Eggs reference has anything to do with the fact that the Ring O'Bells in Bidston Village was closed down, but used to serve this meal before then.

Looks more like it has been demolished and built from scratch. Look at the position of chimney stacks for instance, the chamfered corner, window positions etc - the whole structure seems quite a lot different. Both adjacent properties have been flattened so I consider it very unlikely that this has any remaining structure from the original.

The pavement has been widened as well, whether this infringed towards the road or under the original front of the hotel would take some mapwork to find out.

There's a real danger that the left will drag Britain back to the 1970s, with secure well-paid jobs, ample housing, properly-funded NHS and social care, free tuition, student grants, final salary pensions, affordable rail fares and fabulous films and music. David Osland 2025

I can't see most of the pictures because of settings problem, but can see the one of 1906, which is great as these might actually be my relatives in the photo! My great great grandmother Annie Rimmer had the Anfield Hotel (known as "the Anny") in Walton, for at least 20+ years it appears, in the late 1800's. When her daughter Ellen (Nellie) Rimmer married John Dunbabin in 1901, Nellie and John moved out and took on the Bidston Hotel. My great grandma was also there. I remember too my grandparents and great uncles stories, of going to see family there. Not sure when between 1901 and 1911 they took it on. The census shows prior to 1911, I imagine it was fairly shortly after their marriage which was close to the 1901 census showing still in Church Road walton. Any more on the old Bidston Hotel would be much appreciated if anyone has anything.

Does anyone know if there is a link between these two?
When did the Bidston open?

Just been reading snippets from Aspinall's "Birkenhead and Its Surroundings" (mid nineteenth century)
Below is a quote from page 126 but there is no mention of the ring 'o bells

"In my youth, Bidston Hill "was a popular resort. In the village below was a licensed inn, of great age, for many years kept by a well known family, the Radleys and popularly known as the "eggs and Bacon" house.
It was specially noted for fine hams which the Radleys cured themselves and kept carefully preserved from damp until they were in perfect condition
Many a time we had gone there for tea when "ham and eggs" or "eggs and bacon" were commonly called for"

A little further in the book it does mention the owner of the village done away with the public house

Parts of the book can be read Here

Apparently the ring o bells closed around 1870
"Lady Cust, daughter of Mrs Boode of Leasowe Castle, prevailed upon Mr. Vyner, the lord of the manor, to revoke the Ring O’ Bells’ license due to the continuing scandal of drunkenness on the Sabbath. Bidston has been “dry” ever since"

I can vouch it most certainly has not been dry since grin

My nan played the piano Fri/sat nights in the bidston from 1938 to 1943. That's how she met my grandad who was in the merchant navy docked at Birkenhead.
