Is violence in suburban areas increasing, or are we just hearing about it more because of increased ease of communication/media? Maybe it is because we have mobile phones and hourly news reports (TV, radio, internet), that we hear about these things more often.

I'm not saying that I don't think violent crime is on the increase though. I just wonder why people are more able to come to that decision to injure another person, to the point of taking their life?

I think we live in an age where we are increasingly told you can think and do anything you like. No one is right and no one is wrong. I think the word is 'pluralism'. Morality seems more and more to take a back seat.

Now I'll throw in a controversial idea: Is scientific enlightenment (survival of the fittest) and a move away from traditional (some call them spiritual/religious) values causing an amoral society in the western world?

Discuss.

Yes Maaaam!!!

I have a crude idea, and I believe this is probably the case...

That this is all being caused by a reduction in Family morals (when concerning Kids) and the fact that it is more and more acceptable to have heavy violence in films and computer games.

Waking around Preston last weekend, me and my mates came across some mouthy 10 year old kids, who we promptly told to Feck off....as we were walking back to our flats, they suddenly appeared on a multi storey Car Park, armed with BB Guns!!!!

What makes them think that that is ok?? If an armed Policeman was there, and had a gun aimed at him, he would have no choice but to shoot to kill. Bye Bye annoying 10 year old brat, because they were holding a plastic gun.

Violent Crime has always been around, in fact society was probably more violent in the 1700s than Present Day. As you say though, the advent of Television has brought this type of news into the mainstream. That was the main turning point for the Vietnam War, Television showed it all...

So maybe Mary Whitehouse had a point after all...but in the 60s/70s people were having too much fun breaking free of the heavy shackles of a Victorian/strongly moralistic age. Actually it probably started earlier than that - maybe WWII? I can't really comment as I've never really looked into the history of it.

Maybe we need to return to some 'family values', maybe we need to tell the PC brigade to shut up. Maybe its all just in the scheme of things. Here's a nice little conspiracy theory:

The overall global powers (primarily western) have been working on this 'free-for-all' way of society for some time. Allowing a break-down in values and lawlessness in general. It is only when we become desperate that they will provide us with their answer - an order to things, a reinstatement of severe rule, a pretty face for fascism. Then they will be able to rule us in such a way that we say 'we needed this' because we are unruly.

This will be the beginning of the end...

What these criminal types need is a good kicking to within an inch of their lives and thrown into a 6' x 4' concrete cell with nothing but a broken bed and a bucket. bring back capital punishment, bring back the stocks, get rid of PC.

European court of human rights, as soon as you break the law you should loose your human rights. all too often does the victim become the accused because they have fought back or retaliated. or even the criminal becomes a victim because the police were a little to heavy handed when they had to wrestle that machette off him.

Soon, compensation lawyers will be applying for visiting orders to visit prisoners. I can see it now, While you were waving round your sawn of shot gun in a bank, the police fired a firearm at you, and the noise was above the recommended db and they didnt supply you with the correct hearing protection prior to this event, I think you have a good case for compensation.

They should have new rules for the board game monopoly, go to jail, do pass go, do collect £200, do collect a games console, freeview box and tv, do collect a qualification or trade, do collect a spacious sleeping quarters and hot meals cooked for you, do expect an early release with help to adapt to life on the outside, do collect a rehoming grant, do collect a new identification, do commit more crimes and back to step 1.

The only problem with the death sentence is when you find out later that person was not the perpetrator.

I think prison should be exactly what it is aimed to be - a punishment. Removal of freedom should also be removal of all other luxuries that come with freedom, such as tv etc. They should not be allowed to work out in a gym so that they will be more able to commit violent acts when they come out.

Here's a nice model:

They didn't mention beheading or trying to stab himself in the chest with scissors in the local paper - interesting.
