Originally the 20MPH concept was to reduce deaths specifically of pedestrians, of which there is documented evidence.
Somehow the concept has lost its way. You may notice that most secondary schools and shopping areas are not on 20MPH designated roads despite these being the areas of most pedestrian hazards.
I believe there is very little evidence that 20MPH significantly reduces traffic collisions but that is how it is being promoted in Liverpool City Region.
It is sad that safety departments and councils do not understand the difference between a death and a collision. But life is cheap these days, money comes before people's lives.

Yes. The idea is to make you slow down. The chances of survival from being hit at 20mph is a lot higher than at 30mph. It will save you fuel too.

Yes. The idea is to make you slow down. The chances of survival from being hit at 20mph is a lot higher than at 30mph. It will save you fuel too. It might save fuel if we had cars with gear ratios and throttles designed for 20mph, we don't. The tests that have shown 20mph being more efficient have often been with diesel cars which the Government are trying to ban. We now have the A551 dual carriageway marked as 20mph, that isn't the type of road we were led to believe was going to become 20mph in the lead up to this exercise. When is the Rock Ferry/New Ferry Bypass going to become 20mph? It is one of the most dangerous roads I have ever walked along, so dangerous that very few people voluntarily risk walk along it even though it is a perfectly legitimate right of way for pedestrians.

This will turn in to a cash cow, it has in other places so here will be no different, camaras will now spring up all over the place. Once again we will top up our budget through the motorist. Where's our greens when we need them, DD is correct, the majority of vehicles on the road will use more fuel and produce more pollution at 20mph.
I wonder if pedestrians will take more of a chance crossing roads thinking the traffic is moving slower and therefore more protected, then again that might be more acceptable to the council if they only break a leg or hip.
I've always thought if I get run over it's my fault not the motorist, no matter what speed they are travelling, it would be my stupidity for stepping out in front of them. As for children of a tender age they shouldn't be near roads alone and certainly not play on them, older ones should be educated how to and where to cross them.
Don't see many adverts on the telly theses days on road safety, are they still getting it at school? or do they only concentrate on what gender they should be.

You beat me to it Reno, Well this is another exercise on how Wirral Council wastes tax payers money! Don't forget most of you voting them back in, and no lumbered with them for four years? I have already written to my local Clown asking when they are going to get around to fixing the dangerous pavements, pot holes, cracks in the roads, broken street lighting and most of all the white road marking missing all over Wirral, needless to say still waiting on reply, they don't care! But hey we have found money to paint all these silly 20's on long roads in non built up areas [ never mind fixing the road surface before hand], and now they are going to waste more of your tax money having to erect signs on every side street that merges with one of these 20 roads, two signs on either end of said road otherwise its still a 30mph, so how many tens of thousands is that going to cost us? As for me 20 or not i will be riding at 30 regardless, i never said they could do it!, Oh and its fact more accidents happen at 20mph or below! As well as flying the Ukraine flag at the town hall flag pole maybe they should host the Nazi flag next to it, as that is how Britain is going?

20mph is a Government led project, not Council, both as part of pedestrian safety and pollution control. All Council's are having to do the same. The Government pull the strings, the Council's take the flack as always.
Wirral is just about to spend £60m on improving the quality of roads and pavements, probably digging up some of the 20mph signs that have just been laid. That is the problem of central Governments controlling what local Councils do, there is no means of coordination.
