Just taken the dog out for evening walk, and draped where it fell on my wooden garden gate is the remains of a skylantern. Thank goodness it was burnt out, but I'm horrified that someone would have even done anything that stupid. Lucky that it didn't do any damage, but if it had landed on Whitfield common it might not have been so lucky. How can people be some stupid and selfish?

I wouldn't worry too much. The reason they come down is that they go out.
The wire framework can cause problems with animals, but I think the risk of fire is small.

Many parts of the world have banned them including some areas in the UK. While the risk of any single lantern causing a fire may be low, the effects can be huge because they can land in unattended places. Numerous farmers complain about finding them in hay fields..
There are more than 200,000 fire lanterns sold per year in the UK.
