Today at before 8.00 am I received a phone call from an individual called 'John' claiming to be from Amazon in London. Someone had, he claimed, bought an Iphone on my account tobe delivered to an address in Liverpool - not mine. He was very insistent that I had to give him some information to check whether my account was in private or pubic mode (whatever that is!).

So I thanked him and said I'd check with Amazon, but he became very insistent that he was from Amazon and I had to act quickly. Fortunately, I noticed his phone number - 01439339268 - and the area code was not a London one, so played along with him whilst I checked my Amazon account - which showed no purchase - whilst he became more and more insistent.

I mention it because I think the fact that it was an early call was because many people might not have their wits about them when awakened from sleep and that is what he was hoping for. Be aware of this tactic and don't be taken in. Check with Amazon. Do NOT use the phone number he gives you to do this. Look it up yourself.

Eventually, when I'd had my fun with him, pretending to be confused and half awake, I challenged him on his location and phone number and he hung up. Be aware that being half awake is great for scammers!

Anyone ringing me before 8am - unless it's a family emergency! - had better be ready for a very unco-operative response.
