I was aware of the basic tale about the children, but not the others. The number of different versions illustrate the 'Chinese whispers' nature of the way tales change over time, badly copied, misinterpreted or embroidered for dramatic effect - and how careful researchers have to be! You certainly would have thought there'd be something in the local press of the time. Strange that there isn't - or maybe it just hasn't been found yet.
