A terrible price to pay for a bit of fun that went wrong. There are 35 million cars on GB roads, estimates say app 500,000 are driving uninsured, so spread among all those who are insured this single payout won't have much impact on premiums.

This is just one of many uninsured vehicle claims that come out of our pockets salmon. It all adds up.

It is estimated that the Motor Insurance Bureaux adds about £30 on average to each insurance premium.
It is wrong that uninsured vehicle claims come from people that insure their cars, it should come from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme. Its the Government's job to ensure all motorists are insured not the MIB and not the people that insure their cars, its a Government failure so should come out of central funds.
Yet another way the Government has saved money to give away to the few!

It is estimated that the Motor Insurance Bureaux adds about £30 on average to each insurance premium. I'm sure they do. But the reason is to make bigger profits. If uninsured drivers disappeared, they would pocket the money and we'd be paying the same. If you ask me, the biggest rogues of all are the insurance companies.

If you ask me, the biggest rogues of all are the insurance companies. True to a point, insurance can make huge profits but also can make huge losses, its generally a high risk business so you don't expect them to have small margins. However in the case of car insurance the risk over many car insurances is probably pretty minimal but to further minimise their risk they use general underwriters who don't distinguish between different markets so much, its more like a cash bet than a specific insurance.

I don't believe the 500,000 figure. It may have been true at one point, but in recent years police have ANPR equipment which is linked to the insurance companies so they can within seconds tell whether you have insurance or not. It works too, sort of. My wife was stopped a day or two after I had renewed our insurance. The information hadn't reached the cops and I was telephoned for details of the policy. I am pretty sure that the number of uninsured drivers has fallen to a negligible percentage, which is why insurance companies are advertising that you are covered against accidents due to uninsured drivers. They are very well aware that the chances of this happening are now pretty close to zero.
It is not uninsured drivers that are adding £30 to your insurance premium. It is your insurance company.
I have always taken the point of view that if you can afford the loss yourself, then you should not take out insurance against it. With motoring you could be liable for millions so you have to be insured, but I NEVER take out extended guarantees on things like 'fridges and washing machines.
It is a gamble, and as with bookies, the odds are very much in favour of the insurance companies. Avoid insurance whenever you can.

The 500,000 includes stolen vehicles and unlicensed/banned drivers etc as well as cars that are insured but not for the whole family to drive. It soon adds up. Merseyside traffic cops pull a few every night, some by sheer luck.

Turns up to go on a bike without a safety helmet , gets on a bike with a rider without a safety helmet and no insurance , Then goes on a path that is not meant for bikers and the judge said he didn't expect the bikes to be ridden in a dangerous fashion .
Think its the judge is out of touch with life .
A neurologist told the court: “It is self-evident that he will never take his place in society.â€
Morons who ride off road bikes never take their place in society.

The new rules/guidelines don't seem to have kicked in yet. I've just got a stupidly low insurance by changing companies, Esure/Sheila's Wheels offered roughly half the price of most of the rest of the companies saving me nearly £200.
If you want to lower your insurance premiums, report every idiot driving you see and keep your eye out for vandals and thieves. CH44, CH45, CH41 and CH42 are roughly twice the price of CH60 etc due to the amount of car related crime.

Sheila's Wheels were cheapest for me this year too. But I haggled with Tesco and got them to price match. It was only £30, but still.
