Looking for any history information about Wycherley Road, CH42, please. Any info such as when the houses were built, shops in the street in the past and why it was named Wycherley Road, was it named after someone?

Thanks very much for reading!

Wycherley Rd is not in the 1902 directory, it appears in the 1906 which suggests the houses were built in between those dates.

The 1906 directory has at Number 1, Thomas Donnelly, Greengrocer. 1910 has Hugh Jones, Greengrocer, Number 1, suggesting a shop sold on.

1911 census, Number 52,has Henry Jones, Dairyman, working from home, the 1911 Summary books records 52 as a shop.

Thanks very much bert1, that is fantastic information. I just couldn't find anything out so the information you have found is very much appreciated.

I wonder when the shops ceased to be shops ie when the local shops were slowly squeezed out by the big supermarkets....

Thanks again!

An article about Mersey Park, on this site from a few years ago, may be of interest to you as well.

Just the postcard or any of the other pictures or maps?

It could be a problem with your level of membership. You need to have paid something to be able to see all the pictures and to do some other things like advertising and posting 'What's On'.

The corner shop on Wycherly closed long before the supermarkets took hold. I was at Mersey Park school from 1945 till 1951 and the shop was still a going concern. I then used to walk passed it on the way to Temple Road school up till 1955 and by then I think it had closed.

I can get on other links, Norton.

And jimbob - thanks very much for the information. So the shops would have been converted into houses and stayed that way, once closed. I can imagine what the shops looked like, a bit like 'open all hours' shop!

when I was a kid I lived in Wycherley road, 1959 - 1970.
My mum worked part time in the shop at no52. it was owned by a Mrs Moulton, the shop sold milk, bread, general stuff. After school she used to let us watch telly ( IN COLOUR ).
We moved in 1970, the shop was still open till about 1974 when it was then converted in a house.

Thanks very much ian59 - your information makes great reading! And WOW - a colour tv - in those days - no wonder you remember watching it! Imagine what it cost to buy! (I remember the thrill myself of watching in colour and also when the first video's came out...)

And interesting to know when the shop at no 52 was converted into a house.

Thanks for the information, much appreciated.

Hello Ian

I read your post about Wycherley Road. My Mum used to live next door to the shop, at No 50 Wycherley Road. Her name was Sheila FitzGerald, daughter of Peggy & Joseph with brothers Gerald (killed aged 20 in 1945) and Desmond (in the merchant navy).

They lived the house from at least 1945 until around 1964. Trying to find information as my Mum passed away in 2010 and doing the family history to pass on to other relatives.

All the best,
Julie

Hello Jimbob

I read your post about Wycherley Road. My Mum used to live next door to the shop, at No 50 Wycherley Road. Her name was Sheila FitzGerald (born 1928), daughter of Peggy & Joseph with brothers Gerald (killed aged 20 in 1945) and Desmond (in the merchant navy).

Peggy was a confectioner so she may have worked at the shop in the 1930s/40s/50s? Do you remember it being a bakery at all?

They lived the house from at least 1945 until around 1964. Trying to find information as my Mum passed away in 2010 and doing the family History to pass on to other relatives.

I remember the Fitzgralds well Des being a good friend of mine. Sheila was I believe a buyer for one of the big Liverpool stores and was quite glamorous. Des was a seagoing
engineer and was married to a Spanish girl that he met on one of his voyages. I dont understand the bit about living next door to a shop as when i knew them they all lived in what used to be a shop . They had no front room as it was the old shop and had in it what looked like an old chip shop range. I hope this is of interest to you. email if you wish. [email protected]
