Came home from work to find my Philips smart tv just isn't working. There's no standby light on anymore. Tried 2 different power cables in 3 different sockets and still nada.

It's 18 months old, bought new from Argos. Anyone know anything that might get it working again? Or how long Phikips's warrenty is? I'm not sure if its 12 or 24 months.

Presume you have checked the circuit breaker for power circuits hasn't tripped out?

Check the fuse in the plug. There may be one in the TV as well. If both are OK, I'd suspect the power unit inside the set. The chances are this is a replaceable card. You may be able to get one on the internet and swap it yourself. You will at least know how much they cost If you don't want to do it yourself, it's about an hours job for someone competent to do it so you can estimate roughly what is a reasonable labour charge.

Ours is a Samsung and it's giving problems too, but it is intermittent. It's OK for days then it decides to start responding slowly to the remote, refuses to recognise wi-fi, etc before recovering. I am putting off the evil day when I have to buy a new control board, but it could just as easily be a software design fault so I will have wasted my money!

I wasn't very keen on a smart telly in the first place. A dumb one that works would do me just fine! These things are getting more complex, but the reliability is rubbish as a result. The old acronym KISS - Keep It Simple, Stupid - seems to have been forgotten!

The retailer is responsible for faulty goods and this TV is plainly faulty. Just take it back to Argos.

They may try to fob you off by referring you to the manufacturer, but quote the Consumer Rights Act, which came into force in 2015, replacing the Sale of Goods Act.

This makes plain that the retailer is responsible and gives you a right to a repair or refund.

If Argos are unhelpful, send them a letter as outlined here ...

http://www.which.co.uk/consumer-rig...a-faulty-item-to-be-repaired-or-replaced

... I sent a letter like this to B and Q after they told me they were not responsible for a faulty electric saw I'd bought there and referred me to the manufacturer. The response was amazing. I got a phone call next day from the store manager inviting me in to chose a new saw.

False alarm guys

It's only gone and mugged me right off. Came into the living room this morning to find the standby light on! Used the remote to turn it on and it works. Its not connected to the aerial because i moved it to put my old telly from the bedroom into the living room but it turned on and flicked through the menu's etc as it should.

barstard thing.
