Quote
LIVERPOOL’S beloved Superlambananas are gathering to say a mass goodbye – before being auctioned off for charity.

Some 70 “lambies” will spend two days on St George’s Plateau before being sold to the highest bidder.

Culture Company bosses said the two-day “salute to Liverpool” – on September 8 and 9 – is a thank you to the people of the city for their support.

Sally-Ann Wilkinson, of Wild in Art, the group behind Go Superlambananas!, said: “We’ve had so many messages from people who wanted the event to go on for longer.

“There are complicated reasons why we couldn’t extend it.

“But we hope this mini-extension will be a thank you for the love and affection people have shown them.

“When the statues go to their new homes we hope they will pop up all over Liverpool and people will still enjoy spotting them.”

The Superlambananas will be on display from 1am-8pm on September 8 and from 8am-8pm the next day.

The 70 statues will then go under the hammer with a reserve price of £3,000 each.

A further 40 Superlambananas will go on sale a few days later at an online public auction.

After 10 weeks on the streets of Merseyside the sculptures were today bound for the Speke-based ‘Super Hospital’.

Most of them have already been removed from their temporary home with the rest expected to go before the end of today.

A number of statues are being handed back to the community and some will not be auctioned because they are in such a bad state of repair.

Liverpool-based law firm Hill Dickinson is the principal sponsor for the St George’s Hall charity auction.

Superlambanana fans can buy tickets at £40 each and there will be proxy and phone bidding on the night.

The auction is being staged in association with Sutton Kersh Auctions.

Sutton Kersh will also run the public online auction which kicks off on September 15.

The lambies auctioned online are not expected to have a £3,000 reserve price.

After the auctions, 75% of the net profits will go the Lord Mayor’s Charity Appeal – which includes The Marina Dalglish Appeal and Liverpool Heart and Chest hospital.

For more information about purchasing tickets for the auction go to www.gosuperlambananas.co.uk

Posted By: MissGuided Re: superlambananas - 26th Aug 2008 8:59pm
i'm going to be near a farm in a week or 2 on anglesey where they have little baa lambs - i'll ask the farmer man if i can park a banana on one of their backs. smile

Superlambanana auction raises £550,000 for charity clap clap

Among the successful bidders were comedian John Bishop and Big Brother champ Craig Phillips.

John Bishop, who bought Baa-ve New World, said: “I just liked it. It will go in the garden, and I know the dog will pee on it! But the main thing is the money’s going to charity.”

Craig Phillips was outbid for the LFC statue Koppy, but had a tense two-round battle to buy the homage to builders, Homer, for £10,000.

He said: “I was up against the company that commissioned it but I thought, no matter what I’m going to have it.”

Among others at the auction in St George’s Hall were Kenny and Marina Dalglish, Gerry Marsden, and Pete Price who auctioned off the ECHO-sponsored statue he had designed for £8,500.

Marina Dalglish, whose cancer appeal is one of the beneficiaries of the evening, said: “It’s unbelievable. I didn’t think they would go for anywhere near this.”

Other charities to benefit are Alder Hey’s Imagine Appeal, Liverpool’s Heart and Chest Hospital’s Merseybeat Appeal and the Liverpool and South Sefton branch of the Alzheimer’s Society.

More than 40,000 people said their farewells to the Superlambananas which were put on public display for two days before last night’s auction.

Council leader Warren Bradley said: “They’ve captured the hearts and imagination not only of children but every single generation right across this city.”

An online auction of around 30 more statues takes place from next Tuesday, with 25% of the proceeds going to the Lord Mayor’s charities.

Liverpool Airport lost the cloudy one to Birkenhead Market. The market got it for £10k, because the airport's phone line got disconnected and could't reconnect.

Merseyside derby: Superlambananas go head to head....

Quote
EVERTON and Liverpool-themed Superlambananas came face to face in time for today’s Merseyside derby.

The Blue and Red statues were reunited at the Gillmoss headquarters of discount store Home Bargains, after the firm bought 17 of the iconic figures.

The company paid about £250,000 to purchase the lambies at a charity auction and donated a further £100,000 for the Lord Mayor’s appeal.

The Liverpool and Everton figures will go on show in the new Home Bargains store in Gillmoss, when it opens in a few months.

Joe Morris, operations director at Home Bargains said: “We love the Superlambananas and thought they really captured the spirit of Liverpool.

“We want the statues to go on display around the area so everyone can continue to enjoy them.”

The original Superlambanana was created by Japanese artist Taro Chiezo, but more than 100 replicas were produced to celebrate Capital of Culture.

Mr Morris said: “We are very excited to be in a position where we can share these unique pieces of artwork with the rest of the country.”

All of Home Bargains’ Superlambananas will appear in stores across Merseyside, with some travelling to shops in other parts of the UK.

They will also visit schools, staying for a week at a time.

Schools who wish to request a visit from the Superlambananas should email [email protected] or write to Home Bargains at Superlambanana Visits, TJ Morris Ltd, Axis Business Park, East Lancashire Road, Gillmoss, Liverpool L11 0JA.
