There's explosions, and massive flames, down by Green Lane, I can here it in my flat, and driving back before the area is full of thick smoke and burning embers floating around and bits of tyre. Could pop down and get pics but my tea is in the oven...
Doesn't sound good at all. Lot's of explosions and flames can be seen from Bedford Road area.
hhhm with you saying tyres gotta guess its the scrappy, someone go get pics! im in bed

Eat your tea Matt and then get some pictures
camel lairds is up in flames
Sitting on Holborn Hill. Fire looks like it is the petrol station on the A41 south bound
I live in bebington village and I can smell the fire and see a pall of black smoke and the smokes comming this way
I went out, and my car is covered in burnt black crap!! I took one pic, but you can't get anywhere near it, the polic have shut off the A41 completely from the tunnel exit/Argyle St roundabout etc... All the traffic is now diverting down Old Chester Road. Its deffo not Green Lane Scrapyard, as I drove past there. Up neaerer Kerr Channs, so petrol station theory could be correct, or possibly Bathers??
Will grab the single pic I took.
Text us Ste let us know where about's as our Em n Daz's work place is along there
Got no imaging software installed on me laptop atm, so cnt clean up the image, took it whilst I was driving, so very blurry, sorry for the crap quality folks, just used Vista paint to resize it.
Police Chopper is now overhead.

Some friends on FB who live down that way are saying it started in Lairds, has spread to a refridgeration place and very close to the petrol station.

Pete Price has just said it's definitely NOT Cammell Lairds they've spoke to fire service apparently. Just been up - never seen so many people out at half 11 at night

I know where you mean, sure i can see/hear 2 police helicopter one by town area and other towards mount road
i had a look from the top of mersey park and in my estimation the fire is very big, looks like a couple of hundred feet wide.
I've got ash from the fire on my front path and I'm past Well Lane copshop towards Bedford Road
Just got some pics upload them in a sec
Wow talk about real time footage-good going wiki wirralers!!
Looked like it was just behind the petrol station, gas bottles were going, flames shot across New Chester Road for a while. Police cordoned of nearly quarter of a mile radius.
Are the Wiki servers around there or something, Wiki downed with me for a good half hour.
went down our road to see if i could get a better view my 11 & 12 year old boys wanted to go further but i said it was too late. theres pieces of black stuff like thick burnt paper.
couldnt get anywhere near and had to get off due to my stupid exhaust
LOL, Wiki outing there must have been about 15 of us around there!
A picks from Union Street cant get down as far as the A41
I'm in moreton and could see the smoke from here - large dark shadow coming over the top of Bidston hill.
Must have been huge

Are the Wiki servers around there or something, Wiki downed with me for a good half hour.
I couldn't get on the site either DD
Please can anyone tell me if it's likely to be affecting the sheltered flats by Cobden Place? (Clifford Grange)
i couldnt get back on before. its only through wiki i found out about the fire. i only logged on cos i couldnt sleep, then oscarpops sent me a text incase i didnt know.
No houses or flats in any danger.
Looks to me like it was the John Braid that went up, may have started next door though.
I think it might be th old Mini spares place, or the gas bottle place nextdoor to it.
well to be honest if the gas place has gone up the spares place has too and if they both gone up then so has the petrol station.... i think it has to be all three otherwise the flames wouldnt be soo bad???
I'm pretty sure the petrol station was alright and while a few bottles went it certainly didn't sound like the whole calor gas yard.

Thanks for that info about the flats, I didn't want the older people in there to be on their own if it was going to affect them.
Mersey tunnel is still closed. The round about by green lane petrol sation is still closed. Green lane petrol station still closed. I could not get any closer than green lane petrol station.
Shot a little video of the area, could not get pictures as I've not set the camera up yet.
Looks like it was the gas place near the petrol station?
From the Liverpool Echo:
Gas blasts shock as inferno engulfs Wirral warehouseApr 13 2010
A HUGE EXPLOSION in a warehouse next to Cammell Lairds was being tackled by firefighters from across Merseyside this morning as flames were seen to be leaping 30ft into the air.
The inferno, which was being tackled by 70 firefighters at its height, is believed to have started in a John S Braid owned warehouse adjacent to Cammell Lairds on Campbeltown Road, on Wirral docklands.
John S Braid is an international logistics and freight company. It is not yet known how the fire started.
As firefighters battled to contain the raging fire there were concerns about the fire reaching the ship yard, a nearby petrol station and a Calor gas store. Eyewitnesses reported hearing loud explosions as they believed acetylene or gas cylinders were catching fire.
A spokesman for Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said: “This is a significant fire and firefighters fought the fire defensively to stop it spreading.
“We have used what we call a water curtain to try and stop the fire in its tracks. The flames came be seen across the River Mersey in Liverpool. It is too early to determine how or when the fire started but we will be opening an investigation.
“Luckily there are no residential homes nearby which makes our job a bit easier. We received the call at 10.30pm last night.
“We have received over 70 calls to our control room with many of those from Liverpool which gives an indication of how big it is.”
Paul Power, 23, a supervisor at KFC near to the fires epicentre was evacuated by police who closed the A41 at the entrance to the Birkenhead Tunnel to the Rock Ferry by-pass.
Mr Power said: “We could see smoke out the window and then the police arrived and told us that we have to evacuate.
“When we got outside it was evident that it was a massive fire. I have never seen anything like it. There were explosions going off continually as gas canisters were going off.
“The flames were leaping 30ft into the air and a crowd was gathering to watch. It was an incredible sight and the firefighters were battling to control it.
“They seemed to be really struggling.”
Photographer Paul Griffiths said the entire structure of the warehouse was melting. He said: “I got very close to it, maybe too close. The whole of the building was on fire and was buckling in the heat of the fire.
“The fire seemed to be moving backwards towards the River Mersey. I've never seen flames like it. My parents in Prenton could hear what we think must have been gas cylinder explosions.
“People in streets nearby were being told to shut their windows and stay inside but there was a massive crowd as hundreds of people came out to watch it.”
Eyewitness Richard Parker said: “There seem to be multiple fires as the fire is spreading. The fire fighters aren't just training the water onto the fire but on to the street as well. They seem to be trying to dampen it down to stop it from spreading.
“It is an incredible sight, it is as if a thick fog has descended over Rock Ferry, New Ferry and Port Sunlight. It is only getting thicker. The smoke plume is reaching 200 metres into the air.”
All buildings were evacuated as fire fighters did their best to stop the fire spreading. The police helicopter circled overhead monitoring the fire.
Force Incident Manager Inspector Swan said: “We are monitoring the situation closely. Our role has been to close the A41 and divert traffic.
“We are working closely with our emergency service colleagues.”

Very interested to hear how this started!
2nd bad fire i have seen in Birkenhead this week.
The other one was by the old railway tunnels near Market Street on sunday night.
Can someone get pics of the scene today if local and allowed access?
I would but got to goto work.
As I walked through the hospital (APH) car park this morning all I could smell was burnt tyres and there are big chunks of ash all over the place.
I Left the house for work this morning at 7:30am the A41 just after the roundabout at bottom of bypass is closed the fire crew are still dampening the flames, Traffic is diverted. a The area is solid with traffic! I went back to Spital and took motorway finally got to work at 8:30.
As I walked through the hospital (APH) car park this morning all I could smell was burnt tyres and there are big chunks of ash all over the place.
What time was that?
My fiancee just got to work at APH at 8am as she works in theatres and just asked her and she didn't smell anything.
8.30 Victor - there are little chunks of burnt stuff everywhere - som at least 6" long. If you didn't know there'd been a big fire you wouldn't notice them.
My car is has little flakes of ash all over it
Top photo very fitting - Hot Snacks van driving by.
just took daughter to work and there is black burnt lumps as far up as prenton hall road.
i used to work in john braids and to be honest the only way the fire could of bin started would be if it was delibrately started as there wasnt really anything electrical apart from the office phones! am very interested!
I had to get to work in Wallasey via the motorway this morning because Old and New Chester Roads and Borough Road were all at a standstill.

the pics are good, now i know what building it is. keep getting whiffs of the fire in my kitchen. i live opp viki park.
One way of getting rid of asbestos without the hefty bill of specialist people to remove it.
I'm a bit pissed off as I left my washing out on the line over night and now it smells
also I washed the missis new punto. Ahhh rage!
Heard the bangs and had loads of debris in the back garden last night. That's the Tranmere hall estate.
Great photo's
*****Breaking News****
, just walked past the rear of the site and over heard police radios saying " The owner of the site was in talks with a contractor for removing the building" Sounds funny to me. There are small fires still inside but they cant get to them as they are in the middle. They are trying to cut the gas supply down new chester road too. And there is royal blue abestos too. Yikes
All these photos! Well done gang, good pictures,Who was there first WkiWirral or the press ??????

Just to say Wiki Wirral members are amazing. I have been a member for a while now taking my time reading through all threads, but to have this information so quickly, that Im 100 miles away but was able to tell family back home about it before they knew anything. Once again you are all amazing.
there u go guys my first pics on wiki wirral! Its gone really smokey round new chester road now. Burt water pipe. The people were the contrators, i could see thru the door all the roof down inside, this could of really been bad as the oil pipes run under cambell town road.
cool thanks
Great pics john. The building looks like its built from a stack of playing cards. Bit of a state, innit?
Yea, my friend owns a removals company and all his own stuff and clients all gone, very sad. The building is a mess. I got as close as i could! Exculcive pics

That would explain all the burnt paper everywhere
bloody ell!!! the meat place went up just next door.. Looks like metal around the building has been attacked by something of this world the way its twisted.. At least there are no fatalities...
Its on the main road ajecent to the mersey near the ship yard, also next door to shell petrol station and calor gas!
Amazing how many "eye witnesses" saw the petrol station and gas place go up. They must have worked hard overnight to get them back to normal this morning
Looking at Twitter and Facebook last night, I know why I choose WikiWirral
The smoke is getting very bad now very bad around new chester road smells of rubber and toxic crap

Not forgetting Green Lane train station too lol
Won't be long now until the queues of locals form outside their solicitors offices to register their claims for asbestosis !
Bob.
Haha ill be in the que first! The smell really is bad. Just walked past the shell petrol station its closed but still got staff in! Debris on the road looks like its melted the tarmac. Suppose it smelt like that in the war! Cant blame the germans on this one!
Dont know whether its related or not but this morning driving north on the M53 all I could smell in the air was Savlon. Dont know whether it was coming from the smoke from the fire. I wondered what the fire brigade were doing? Putting plasters on it and kissing it better? Clearing up the scorch marks with mummy spit?
In all seriousness those boys have had one hell of a job by the sound of it. Hope everyone remains safe.
Can anyone tell me what the current situation with the A41 is right now, both north and southbound? Have to go both ways in about 40 mins.
Southbound was closed 5 minutes ago from Green Lane to Union Street but North has been open since about 9.15 this morning
Hi paul, im on the a41 now. south bound it is closed but north bound is open. They will be opening up cambell town road at rush hour. Its pretty smokey but no ques as yet. My adivce is go up green lane take a left all the way down to the old southend social down union street past the right onto the a41. Hope that helps
Thats great guys, cheers for the rapid update.
My apartments are located on Old Chester Road, and the traffic is a constant traffic jam and is only going to get worse as the rush hour progresses, deffo one area to avoid if you can.
As for the smell, it is awful, still a terrible smell of burning, I can't open my windows or doors etc... and its not good, the apartments are insulated to 2010 standards obviously, which means its not losing any real heat, and its like a fookin oven in here right now, the temp gauge is at 33 degrees right now!! Tis rediculous, im getting through a litre of orange juice an hour atm haha!
I had to go past your place this morning Matt on the way to Bromborough and it was bad then aswell.
It took me half an hour to get from bebington village to birkenhead then had to go to a funeral at landican and you could smell the smoke there and it wasnt the crematoriom
Aren't those the wrong way round?
I thought that Chris but I presumed peodude was being ironic.
I have posted a link to this story on FB so that people can get the real story instead of a load of supposition and guesswork.
Aren't those the wrong way round?
You are correct. I am an idiot
Idiotic, not ironic! My mistake.
could someone put a google map up ringing the parts that were on fire please
Trying to picture in my mind where fire was (by Green Lane stn part or further up by bypass/Bathers?)
.
There was already minor fire damage to the building from a lorry trailer that had been set alight. More arson do we think, accidental, or something else?

Excellent photo Waddi mate! Love the before and after! I saw the BBC website had a photo of the place in flames earlier on when it was on the BBC Merseyside front page, but its dropped off now
hey guys work next door to the fire It was the storage place, there is asbestos debris every were. Lots of pics too.
Aren't they relatively new buildings
I thought asbestos was banned in building
I cant take credit for any of those pics Matty, the fire damage pic was taken from these boards, another members pics (sorry whoever it was, hope you dont mind, if you do I have no problem removing) and the other 2 are google maps.
Just wanted to through everything together to stop the same questions being asked over and over again.
when iwas walking through viki park this morning there was pieces of debris, some of it looked like fiber glass.

Yes, myself and Kamil noticed the white fibrglass bits too in my car park.
just been down still smoking!
more!
THANKS FOR THGE PICS GUYS
Hey waddi, yea i took those pics, about 10:30am yesterday! they came out quite well. in an ironic way.
Just realised I used to work in there when they made parts for Vauxhall! Drove out of the Mersey tunnel and christ, what a stench!
If the fireman was right and if the asbestos was in the building structure, then someone's for it big time. It's been banned for ages. It's been banned for much longer than Tin Town has been there.
Maybe stuff stored within the sheds contained asbestos?
Again, if the fireman's correct in his analysis, then everyone downwind of the plume has a legacy they've never even dreamt of !!
The lawyers are already ordering their new flash motors and mansions !!!!
The firemen weren't masked, they haven't excluded people from the area, the buildings are relatively new - all points to no known asbestos present.
Bigger worry is the benzine products etc given off by the burning plastic, a lot of these are major carcinogens.
Do firemen have any sort of detectors or ways of monitoring for different sorts of chemicals that may be in the air when they first arrive at a fire
We have a fireman somewhere on wiki who may tell us more
firemanlee
I know his brother Sam
i liv close to this and saw it goin up it was scary alrite
les you dont live on the peel ave estate do you?
Dont think its asbestos, next door is Sims recycling, and they used to recycle fridges! Talking to their engineer in the Ellesmere Port plant today and they recon that their damage is about £3 million!!! They also had a load of foam insulation from fridges stored that went up!!! Not good for the old ozone!!!!
that tin town your talking about. would like to point out that the original steel structures of those sheds where errectet {built] in the late 40s. i watched them been cladded in the original black sheetin when i was a lad and hanging around on Warrens fieled. Warrens field was the piece of grass land to the south of the corporation destructer yard which is where the gas bottle place is now
Topic Trimmed due to off topic and personal insults.
The large building was built in the early 60's as the stores building for the Polaris submarine project. It later became the shipyard's general stores. The cladding was corrugated steel ,not asbestos panels.
Bob.

lmao dude ther was a fire
The A41 is still shut out of Birkenhead (or at least it was at 2am) and it still smells of burning around here haha!
Amazing!!
Jake is at the match and he just texted me to say that the fire has restarted. Anyone have any news???
Ay cant smell nothing, is he serious? If so ill pop along and have a lok.
He says there is a fire in the same direction. He's a distance away so can't say for sure. Just guessing.
It had deffo started smoking again last night about 8pm ish
i was just taking my daughter to bromborough and seen black plummes of smoke on new chester road and fire engines heading that way i could see the smoke from the asda in bromborough
Its so sad seeing all peoples belongings there, there was cases and all sorts just outside.
They've just said on the news that there is / was a big fire in Hope Street Liverpool. Could the smoke have drifted across???
the fire in liverpool was offices next to the philarmonic pub ,over 60 firefighters were there, started around 6.50 this morning, they are still there damping down, they dont know how it started.
They've just said on the news that there is / was a big fire in Hope Street Liverpool. Could the smoke have drifted across???
No it was definitely from this side and drifting towards Liverpool. Thick black clouds of smoke but it didn't last too long.
the smoke you saw may have come from the sheds on New Chester road, the fire brigade where back there late this afternoon due to the fire or a new one in the sheds had flared up
Missed it coming back through liverpool thank god as was in preston until 6:45pm
i saw a plume of smoke this afternoon when i was going through viki park. it didnt look like it was from the new chester rd fire.
It was being demolished today, Fire Brigade may have been for that and the cloud of smoke may have actually been a cloud of dust.
Could see it while driving along Arrowe Park Rd just past Landican.
It was being demolished today, Fire Brigade may have been for that and the cloud of smoke may have actually been a cloud of dust.
No it was definitely smoke, not dust. Looked more like a tire fire than anything else.
it did catch fire again the girl in screw fix was telling every one in there but they got it under control very quickly
There was a kind've large fire at the side of the M53 around this time (J2 - J3). It was caused by sparks from the train on dry grass.
Blaze engulfs Wirral warehouse twice in one week
Apr 17 2010 by Tina Miles, Liverpool Echo
A HUGE blaze swept through a warehouse in Merseyside today – the second fire there in just a week.
Fire fighters were called to the derelict building next to Cammell Lairds as smoke poured into the air.
Earlier this week, crews fought to contain a massive explosion in a warehouse on Campbeltown Road, on Wirral docklands.
The first inferno, which was tackled by 70 firefighters at its height, was believed to have started in a John S Braid owned warehouse on Monday evening.
John S Braid is an international logistics and freight company.
As firefighters battled to contain the flames, which leapt 30ft into the air, there were concerns about it reaching the ship yard, a nearby petrol station and a Calor gas store.
Merseyside Fire Service today said they were called to the same location on Campbeltown Road today at 2.50pm following reports of another fire.
A spokeswoman for Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said they would return to the site later tonight to ensure the area was safe.
She said: “We went back out there today and had four appliances in attendance at the derelict building.
“It was caused by oil from an electrical transformer that had caught fire.”

But I (Jakesb) was right it was the same waerhouse on fire again. So I get the prize of going to all the walks
