Is it possible to hire a car for a day to get me to holiday destination (in UK) and then hire another for the return journey a week later. Dont need one while on holiday so don't want to pay for it just sitting there.

Yes you can.
You may have to leave the car at the nearest depot. And then make your way from there ?
Is it eurocar that will pick you up not sure if they collect the car. . .
