Probably forgot Ireland and if you go back far enough you can add scotland and england and wales. Our English history is not that glorious---- we just killed for other peoples lands and resources rather than factional religious reasons---well excepting the crusades. We in the west rip unborn unwanted babies from the womb but we sanitise it by making it "legal".

They are not all muslims but also hindu and other religious faiths. People of no faith are equally murderous. The problem imo then is within man and which other factors like certain beliefs, alcohol, drugs, greed , poverty, lust, power, politics, fear can bring out.

In the words of "V" If the truth be told .....we need only look in a mirror

Is this Middle East mayhem a bit of an elephant in the room, with regards to news reports? Ok, we get bulletins on the problems in individual countries but I've yet to hear one commentator report on the collective chaos as a whole.

They probably think our tiny brains cannot comprehend the intricacies of international warfare.

The combinations of 'whys' and 'wherefores' could keep Aristotle arguing the points for a million years.

Personally I wonder what part temperament, hot spices and unbearable heat bring into the equation (whatever that is).

it could come as a surprise to you but I am reasonably well up on ancient history, although maybe not so much as you are. I am not claiming we don't have any information about the past, but that doesn't prove everything we believe is correct, even quite a lot of recent records of b.m.d.s are wrong, tracing my family tree proved that to me, so it's highly likely ancient documents etc can be too. I am sure Germany's school children are taught an entirely different version of the first and second world wars to our's.I should imagine each country teaches events from their own point of view, and propaganda must have alway,s been around.you must know about how the people of Britain were cohearsed into christianity by combining their ceremonies such as easter, which was of pagan origin, and there are many more examples of manipulation in the past

You sound cross! Well don't be, I'm not having a go at you.
So far as I am aware, Christ was crucified at the feast of the Passover, which ,I am sure you are aware,is of Jewish origin. This was the 14th day of the first month. The first month being April, and the new years started in March. The calendars changed and it now is on the 15th day of Nisan, which falls between March and April of the Gregorian calendar. The 14th Nisan is now The Lord's Supper. The early Christian church did not observe Easter, only Passover. The pagans celebrated the return of Spring, long before the Christians celebrated Easter. Babylonians celebrated a ritual called Ishta, which was the name of a family ,2000 years prior, in a similar way to our Easter now, and yes they had pagan gods, so you are right to say that over time the traditions of Easter which is to represent the beginningof new life, has developed and crossed over, but the dates change for us each year according to when lent begins. The Jews still celebrate the Passover on the 15th.day of Nisan, which is in commemoration of thr Jews liberation from slavery in Egypt. Those who celebrate Easter today, could be said to be celebrating a Pagan festival, I suppose, if that's what they wish to see.It took over 300 years for Christianity to be observed in Britain .Most don't acknowledge the Christian beliefs anyway, so it is a holiday for them and nothing else.
The council of Nicosea set the date for Easter in the 4th century AD to coincide with the Paschal moon,But why the paschal full moon? Because that was the date of Passover in the Jewish calendar, and the Last Supper (Holy Thursday) occurred on the Passover. Therefore, Easter was the Sunday after Passover.
Apart from all that and more, we are not really discussing the topic, and my point is that the ancient civilizations had no religious followings as we know now.Islam, was much later, and does not promote killing at all. In the regions originally mentioned, they come from very strong enthnic roots and beliefs, find it hard to give up their identity and are being manipulated by the modern world, with too many radical groups wishing to cause mayhem. ('They' being the ones who are promoting the violence and bloodshed). Not forgetting the dear Mr George Bush jnr. who spoke of these people as Muslims, in a blanket fashion. Once upon a time and not so long ago, we referred to foreign people by their nationality. That dear gentleman brought it down to religious groups and we have followed the example ever since, which to my mind is wrong.Religion has nowt to do with the origin of these wars, only extremeists, dictators and interfering outside influence.

Correction: Should be 'The Council of Nicea' not the Council of Nicosea as stated above.
The Council of Nicea was the firt council of Christian Bishops.

quote "Religion has nowt to do with the origin of these wars, only extremeists, dictators and interfering outside influence".

I think the sunni and shia muslims are killing each other over their differing view of Islam.

bbc.co.uk/religions

The majority of Sunni and Shi'a Muslims do not allow their theological differences to divide them or cause hostility between them. For example, Shaikh Mahmood Shaltoot of the Al-Azhar University in Cairo, the oldest institution of Islamic learning in the world, considers Shi'a Islam to be of equal status to the four Sunni schools of jurisprudence.

However, current global political conditions mean there has been a degree of polarisation and hostility in many Muslim societies. The term Rafidi (meaning "Rejecter") has been applied by radical Sunnis to disparage Shi'as. In turn the Shi'as will often use the label Wahabi, which refers to a particular sectarian movement within Sunni Islam, as a term of abuse for all those who disagree with Shi'a beliefs and practices.

Politics and religion - the worst mix.

See my beloved Egypt - religiously motivated politicos - who were going to sort the country out - found out like all politicians that it ain't easy - so just did the religious bit instead. Which is easy cause all religious followers by definition have a space occupied by mumbo-jumbo claptrap rather than by brain, so are easily led by charlatans.....

I'll get my coat and hope Egypt makes it through - the real people not the 'mouths' are lovely people... more likely to shake their heads at the stone-throwing yobs than shake their fists...

Hi, I don't think I explained myself very well, I agree with almost every word that granny say's, the point I'm trying to make is that just because things are written in the bible, the quaran, etc or inscibed on monuments, doesn't prove anything, as we all know men lie, add on bit's leave out bit's, use propaganda for their cause, they do it today, ie george bush, tony blair, saddam hussein, and many more,so the probability of the powers that ruled in ancient times did exactly.

War criminal blair said years ago on tv about the need to overcome " problems " in the area of Iran Syria Iraq etc etc
It's all about oil control.
It's been talked about and planned for the last 40 years. Anyone seen jimmy carters 70 s speech about needing to a grip on the worlds oil and supply ?
I hate the way we bleet on about casualties of our war, no one mentions the hundreds of thousands who aren't terrorists ( women kids etc ) who were blatted into the dust in Iraq. 80 % killed weren't an army member.
I don't take sides but its no wonder they hate us.
There's a template of wars in Middle East == supply arms/ insurgents , get yourself a dictator , put one in if there isn't one , justify a war somehow,go in there bombs blasting , then spend billions of tax pounds or dollars " restructuring " , making the country far worse off/ unstable.
Oh yes control the oil fields. Sod the people , that's the important thing.

offtopic This thread is about asking why the Arab nations seem to be intent on killing each other.
