Hi! all you knowledgable people can you help please. According to my 1911 Ordanance Survey Map the OLD HAYMARKET ( not Birkenhead Market ) was located at the bottom of Borough Road ( which ran directly into New Chester Road )and could be seen from the Argyle Theatre ( Oliver Street ) site looking across Argyle Street,or it could be reached via Wilbraham Street which would place it near to the old Mersey Tunnel Entrance.I am now told NO this is wrong as the Old Haymarket was sited in Hinson Street off Argyle Street behind the Brass Balance ( Wetherspoons ) and the ABC Cinema ( now Riley's )in an area now known as Old Haymarket Square. I seem to remember it was at the bottom of Borough Road not far from Shaftsbury Boys Club near to Thomas Street and Hind Street ( Old Gas Works ). Can you please advise to its true location and does anyone have any photos of it please. As far as I can remember you could get a bus from St James Church in the North End and ask for The Haymarket.did this many a time with my dear mum. Many Thanks Tony

I remember it as you do. Here's the map. I've marked with an X where the ABC/Riley's is (or as I remember it, the Savoy). At the time of the map, 1912, it was the New Theatre Royal.
I've never heard of the Haymarket being anywhere else.

The problem is/was the Birkenhead Market Hall that burnt down in 1974 was known and called by many The Old Haymarket, which as far as I know never carried that name officially, the square at the Market street end of the hall where the outside market stalls where, was Market Square.
More Maps below,

Tony,
on the 1911 os map, is it actually marked "Old Haymarket"

Bert, the map I posted is in fact the 1911 O.S. map. No mention of "Old Haymarket". I'd never heard the Market Hall called the Old Haymarket.

Thanks Chris, Map,

My Auntie always called it the Old Haymarket and I've heard the term used many a time, now whether this was because the bus was marked so and they got off there to go to the market, a possibility.

What can I say ' Thank You ' is hardy sufficient for the super replies and memories I received from you very knowledgable and history dedicated people out there. Thanks to your invaluable assistance I now know where the Old Haymarket once stood. Thanks also for the photos, especialy of the old Birkenhead Market where as a boy a freind and I assisted ' Elly ' selling from the back of his vehicle, we waited for his stick to fall following his sales pitch and watched for the ladies holding up their money for the bargains. All in the open air at the rear of the so called 'Country Stalls' what great days they were.Doe's anyone have any photos of the 'Old Haymarket '? Once again Many Thanks .Tony

Wasn't it the triangular open space (cobbled?) opposite the 'Haymarket' bus stops outside Sturla's department store. We used to get the 50 or 58 bus after a shopping trip down the length of Grange Road. I'm talking of the '40s, '50s era.

I agree bri445. That's what I always took to be Haymarket. My Mum & Dad called it that, so it "must" be right. grin The buses stopped at Sturlas door. I recall when they dug up the cobbled area to expose the "cut & cover" tunnel underneath. (Where the "M" in Haymarket is on Bert's last map.) They put new concrete beams in for extra support when they were mauling about with the new tunnel approach roads.

I've a old corpy bus blind showing "Haymarket" as a destination. Not the "via" blind. Never realised buses terminated there. Oops - going OT. Sorry.
