Hello all, I was wondering if anyone knows of any engineering apprenticeships that are available for a school leaver, my son missed out on a Cammel Lairds apprenticeship because of a lost application form and he is desperate to get a placement in an engineering company, my son attended MECNW (Maritine Engineering College North West) as part of a two year day release from school, he passed his final exams at the college and gained a city and guilds in engineering

He is an active lad and plays a lot of sport inc football, tennis and golf, my son is a good lad and will excell in what ever he puts his mind to, he dosent drink or smoke and is very keen to learn, he has a good head for maths and can make out sums in his head that would leave me struggling with a pen and paper. I hope that in writing this, someone who see's this post and knows of an engineering company looking for a bright and keen young lad will inbox me. Thank you in advance, yours futurepast

It may be too late for this year, but worth a try. Unilever in Port Sunlight do manufacturing apprenticeships that are essentially engineering.

Try the link below.

Thanks for the link Julesmac it looks like they run the apprenticeships from March till June, trouble is he only got his final results at the end of August so he would'nt have been able to apply as he would not have known what grades he was going to end up with, his grades where good enough to apply so he is going to just in case there is a space still left, thanks once again

There is a company called TTE based in ellesmere port they take on every year. Basically what happens is they take you on and a company then picks you and sponsors you and you do your on the job training with them whilst doing the classroom learning at TTE.

They won't take on until September but its worth a wait

You have to apply for these things well in advance in most cases. In the Spring is the best time and you do not have to wait until after exam results ! However it is still worth trying T.T.E. now in case they might have any spaces left for starting in the
next few weeks . Has he not had any Careers Advice from the training scheme he
was on ? Do also try British Aerospace and Toyota on Deeside . That seems to be the best area for Engineering Apprenticeships these days . Excellent training and
future employment prospects & well worth the travel. He needs to get on the phone
as soon as poss or fill their forms in , on line. Best of luck but get stuck in !!

Yes for apprenticeships you should be applying before they leave school in the same way you would apply for a university place...I had trouble trying to tell my sister and mum this, they look at what grades you are expected and tell you what you need, TTE require quite high grades I think, but my brother went here and really enjoyed it, has done very well out of it. It might be worth getting some kind of work experience till they start, ask for unpaid work or just to be able to shadow (I dont know how this works with engineering but I know with other jobs) and just general work to show enthusiasm and to show they havnt been sitting round all year
