HTC are honestly a bit useless, ok on the face and for absolute basics, go deeper and they're distinctly average at best.
iphone, though i'm not an apple fan, nor do i generally reccomend their products, is something you'd probably best be looking at.
the new nokia lumia is also a great phone, and as it's nokia, it'll withstand decades of 'abuse'
my girlfriend had the galaxy europa and honestly it is a dreadful phone, it kept freezing, slowing up, crashing etc.
i had the 'galaxy mini' which is like £20 more and honestly, it's a MUCH better phone, you can pick one of them up for about a hundred quid (there's even a 'galaxy mini 2' out now)
go to carphone warehouse in liverpool one and they have loads of phones there switched on and unlocked for you to actually have a go of them and see how they fare for you rather than look at dummy phones and read a few lines in a crappy catalogue.

I have Nokia N8, 12MP Camera, HD Video, Surfing Web and Social Networking seem a bit laggy but that could just be poor internet in my area. Also any phone that has 3G can go on 3 Network other phones with just Wifi will not be able to. Nokia N8 though costs over £300 so really does depend on how much you want to spend, best off looking on Techradar website they do compare phones, so you can see whats best for value.

Everything you say there leads to one phone, the Nokia Lumia 710, currently £129 SIM-free at Carphone Warehouse. Facebook (and Twitter, LinkedIn, Google, Yahoo, MSN blah blah) intergration quite literally blows the competition away, the phone/OS is, to a degree, built on it (you don't "need" an app for that lol), Windows Phone 7.5 OS is probably the most stable and by far the fastest mobile OS out there atm (so you don't need to worry about hardware specs), and as said above, it's a Nokia, so will probably last a liftime. Nokia are launching the Tango OS-update next month, which will increase performance and reduce RAM usage even-further (down from 236MB to ~118MB iirc) as well as add some new features and even better intergration with social-networking and Microsoft's Skydrive cloud service. The 710 has Gorilla Glass 2 (same as iPhone 4s) and Nokia ClearBlack technology, meaning you can see the screen in even the brightest of sunlight, and it makes the blacks well, very very black, and the colours more vibrant. It also has hardware buttons, a rarity nowadays due to asthetics, but a better solution than capacitive buttons on a capacitive touchscreen device. The camera is 5mp, with an LED flash, not a HTC Titan II or Samsung SIII camera... but then its £300 less!! It records 720p, but due to the compression used on Nokia devices, 720p tends to look as good as 1080p on other handsets - not that you really need 1080p on a phone of course.
The reason you're experiencing freezing, is actually probably due to your phone running Android - Android doesn't work too well on lower-end phones, and even on top-end dual and quad-core phones, it still gets laggy at times in comparison to Windows Phone and Apple's iOS on the iPhone, due to a complete lack of refinement and the inability for Google to optimize the OS for particular hardware, or control what shite is included with the phone or contained within apps.
Unless you are a geek, iOS or Windows Phone seem the logical way forward, with Windows Phone devices more modern and a sleeker OS, more suited to lower budgets, and iOS devices more suited to fashion-conscious people who have higher budgets, or those who have already purchased a tonne of apps for iOS (married to the iOS eco-system for want of a better term). Most apps are now on both platforms, but there is still some on iOS that are not on other platforms.
The HTC Radar is also available from Orange stores atm for £99, also a Windows Phone device; it's every bit as good as the Lumia 710, but does not include the Nokia apps such as Nokia Drive (full-featured and free GPS navigation system with free maps available for the entire world, as Nokia own the company that develops the maps for most systems) amongst others.
If you want to go down the iPhone route, keep an eye on CEX or eBay around that budget, you may be able to pick up an iPhone 3G. But don't buy a fake off eBay, although the OS looks similar, they are running Windows CE which is almost useless in comparison as a phone OS, and nothing like the real iPhone experience.
The Nokia N8 is a lovely phone, probably the finest Symbian handset produced, but Symbian is dead and buried for all intents and purposes since February 2011, as Nokia have ditched all their other "smartphone" OS's, including Symbian, Maemo, Meego etc, for Windows Phone, hence they are pushing the Lumia line heavily now. It's estimated they are losing money on every 710 sold at this price, thanks to Microsoft essentially bankrolling them, so the offer won't last forever. The phones are around £200 - £300 everywhere else, I think Expansys have the same handsets in atm (remember, the 710 in CPW is SIM-free so not locked to any network, no network shite on them) for £279?? The difference between the 710 and 800 specs wise is minimal, mainly camera, design and storage (8GB vs 16GB).
Go in any phone shop and have a play with one (in fact any Windows Phone handset), you will be converted from Clunkdroid in minutes (unless you like hacking etc)...

I have an iphone now and wish I had stuck with my HTC instead. I think Android is much better. The only fault I had with the HTC was the storage space, was always low on space and couldn't download new apps or do updates. But they have probably got bigger storage space now. Not a big fan of Samsung myself either.

I too have the Samsung Galaxy Europa. Truly a dreadful phone and to be avoided at all costs. Mine's nearly hit the wall a few times.

I have a cheap Nokia phone from Tesco anda £10.21 month phone deal.My children think I am a dinosaur, but if lost easily replaced. It's no use to most who want all singing dancing phones. If I wanted the latest I think quality of the camera would be of importance, but at my age I am satisfied with what I have, and part of my living within my means. As you get older I find less is best!
