I am fairly sure that if you left the money sticking out the machine waits for a set time and then "sucks" it back in again

No deffo don't suck back in, I have found money that someone left still sticking out of a cash machine, and them self tills don't suck money back in. There know way of it doing that. The only bit that sucks in is when you pay not when change or cash back is givein.
