I thnk it is unfair categrizing everyone who might be suckered in as a moron.....dont forget there are many lonely people in this world who might rely on the internet and the like for compamy and who might have believed bcaues of he fact that tthe names mentioned were genuine winners of all that money that they did indeed want to help other people..not everyone is able to sort the wheat from the chaff but that does not make them morons

It all boils down to greed and stupidity with all these types of scams. Serves them right.

I beg to differ (and I think you'll find I'm not the only one). Anyone answering questions like this to an anon email deserves everything they get.

I would warn people even if they ARE greedy and stupid. Mainly because scammers/confidence tricksers are amoral scumbags who don't deserve to be rewarded with lots of money just for being willing to steal from others.

And to MattLFC...

Wrong; don't be so arrogant. As Bandy pointed out, some folk are not as alert as they used to be. You'd just better hope that you don't lose your faculties in your old age.

You are, of course, entitled to you opinion. It was Hitler's opinion that the Jewish race should be exterminated. I was, however, referring not to your opinion but to the premise of the final sentence.

Not entirely sure what you're point is with regards that??

Darwin thought of part of it first; also Hitler held the view that smoking was bad thanks to Nazi research into the health effects of it (long before any of the Allied countries had a clue), does that make it somehow any less true?

Chris, is it not fair to say that the perpetrators of this crime (and let's not forget, it is a crime, and anyone doing it, should be punished to the full extent of the law), are praying on somebodies stupidity, greed and ignorance?

Now there are undoubtedly some victims who are vulnerable (mental issues, elderly who maybe less aware of what's going on etc), and I know I'm not, and I doubt ex0 is saying these people deserve it.

But there are plenty of people who lead normal lives, supposedly have the intelligence to hold down jobs and savvy enough to make good use of the internet etc, generally "normal" (if you can use that word) people who get stung for it. These people are surely only being taken for a ride due to greed and possibly ignorance.

The fact is, people still fall for these scams, even though they have been happening for 15 years now, and are regularly highlighted on the internet, forums, television, library posters, newspapers, radio etc... most people have heard about them, but still choose to go ahead and send their bank and credit card details to Mr. Mbeki in Nigeria.

As a judge would say, ignorance is no excuse.

At the root of most of these scams, is greed (on both parts). If you are greedy enough (and stupid enough) to get scammed, to think somebody will give you £1million for doing sod-all, and having no actual reason to do so, via a dodgy email from an anonymous or unknown source, then you deserve to be scammed, just as much as the scammers deserve to be locked up.

My point is that the "survival of the fittest" attitude has no place in any civilized society. Otherwise we'd be euthanising the disabled, the elderly and mentally ill, etc. Like Hitler did.

What we endeavour to do instead is help them, protect them and support them. And it's absolutely right that we do so.

Your comments, (and ex0's,) seem to condone, and even endorse, these scams, and it bothers me that the victims of this type of crime are viewed with more contempt than the criminals are!

It shouldn't matter if they ARE greedy or lazy... the scammers are always a whole lot greedier and lazier!

I love the fact that as well as "survival of the fittest" having no place, it seems there is no place for common sense in the modern world.

Nobody for one minute has suggested euthanising vulnerable people, or even moving towards eugenics etc... And I pass no blame onto those who are vulnerable and fall victim to these scams. And my personal opinion is there is a place for survival of the fittest in this world, so long as all is fair and nobody loses a bollock.

That's news to me;

the scammers deserve to be locked up.

It appears you are bringing in irrelevant nonsense to suit your own agenda. Instead of trying to doctor the discussion, can you please read the previous posts properly first, instead of scanning over them and posting quick-fire reaction that makes no sense.

This isn't a different type of scam.

It's a random anon email address sending you a badly worded and formatted email asking for your details. The contents of the message are irrelevant. It's the same scam that people have been falling for since the birth of the intertubes.
