i,
I think I have a bad virus on my PC. Every time I start up the computer a fake anti virus detection program starts up and prevents me from connecting to the internet and doing anything. I have an old Kaspersky rescue CD which I tried to run but it didn't get rid of the virus probably because the CD in about 6 years old. Any advice will be very welcome Many thanks, Vicky

Unfortunately not, it just expired! But now I can't go online using the PC to get some more. I've got my ancient netbook so I can go online on this to get anti virus software but not on the PC.

Thanks for the advice guys. The program that come up doesn't seem to have a name. It is just a System Check window that automatically 'scans' the PC for error. I'll download Avast onto my pendrive and try and install it onto the PC but as I can't access Windows Explorer on the PC, I hope the program installs automatically once the pendrive is plugged in.

hi UFFda,
These types of viruses can be removed but can be difficult to get rid of completely. the best advice is always to do a complete format of the hard drive and reinstall windows, this way you can be sure that your PC is virus free.
The fake AV that starts up will have a name. you will need to google the name of the fake AV and disable it using regedit and msconfig. you can run malwarebytes, this is a good program but the problem is it usually removes the instance of the virus, within 10 mins the virus is back.
To be honest if you plan on cleaning you will probably need a pro, if you plan on formatting then you can do that yourself in about an hour.

I was out, haven't had my tea yet If you want the virus removing I can do that or try and help you to if you feel confident enough. If you want to start again with a fresh system then you just want to copy your My Docs folder (or wherever you store your pictures and docs) then format and reinstall Windows. MAKE SURE you scan the docs for Viruses BEFORE you put them back on your computer, or you'll just be starting the whole thing again. If you want this doing I can do it, or if you need any help just send me a pm and I'll try and guide you through.

hi UFFda, The fake AV that starts up will have a name. you will need to google the name of the fake AV and disable it using regedit and msconfig. This happened to me about 18 months ago, as did as The ComputerLab suggested. I switched my PC on one morning, every time I tried to open a file or application, I go a message saying it was infected and I need to D/L a specific AV Program (Fake Crap) and pay £25 for the pleasure so I got my Netbook and searched the AV name I was suppose to buy to cure my PC it was all fake even if I paided £25 it would go away but resurface weeks later and I'd have to pay again. So I searched on how to remove it on my Netbook it involved deleting a installed folder in Windows\System and removing several Registry which I did I re-booted it was gone then I did a full AV scan and a Malware scan that took most of the morning to sort. But it was all OK Never pay if you have this sort of trouble as the fake program will reappear later. Hope my experience helps.....

Hi download this link from your netbook and put it on a pen drive and install it on the infected computer. I had a virus a few weeks ago, exactly like yours and this program got rid of it. http://www.kaspersky.com/antivirus-removal-tool?form=1

Thank you SO much for all your advice guys. The problem with putting any anti virus software on a pendrive is that I don't know how to access the software from the infected PC which won't let me open any windows! I've eventually found the name of the malware which is System Check.Com and found a website Bleeping Computer.com which has insructions on how to remove the malware. Unfortuanley it tells me to :- "Using the F8 Method: 1. Restart your computer. 2. When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows XP Advanced Options menu. 3. Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys. ETC....." I've tried to get it into the safe mode six times tonight and amount to wear out my F8 key, Windows XP still fires up with the maleware. At this stage I would happily sacrifice my computer if it needs to be put out of it's misery but would love my photos and docs which at present I can't access to copy. I think I need help from The Dr I'll PM you tomorrow or over the weekend if your kind offer to help still stands as I'm a bit out of my depth here! Vicky
