Does this belong to anyone?

Spotted it a few times around Wallasey and wanted to let you know that it looks like a fantastic example of a great car.

I've always loved them and the subtle mods on this one make it look brilliant. Driven well too!

Thumbs up!

Have you seen the White 5 door one going round with the massive new shape m3 wheels? It's only a 1.8 but it looks absolutely stunning! It's whiter than White.

No, not seen it - not a huge fan of white cars though.

There's a matt black E90 new shape 3 series going round too which looks OK, just a shame it's such a puny engine!

Yes was speaking to adam today, dropped a van off there for his cousin dave to paint.
He`s also selling a petrol monster truck. He only wants £800 for the pug.

Its not cheap down london, as long as you enjoyed yourself, it`s only money bud, if you have it spare enjoy it (thats how i think anyway). laugh

Seen the wrapped E90 going round wirral aswell although its just a standard spec:(, not as tidy as the m3 thats been painted in the gloss black with the metal flake that has black rims twin seven spokes aswell on low profile and big dirty red brembos

Got photos of it somewhere, was on Scnizer springs and has carbon roof fins paint looks far better than the vinyl wrap imho

I do definitely want to see his 205!

I think a lot of people regard the E36 328 as one of the best drivers BMW of all times based on the fact that it was the last of them before they started getting complicated and riddled with drivers aids and other bits and bobs.

If I remember rightly, it's got the standard split rims on it, I think they were made by BBS? He's made it look better but he's also kept it subtle. Perfect.

i wanted to get the manifold (m50) and BBTB for mine. I think mine has a lot of unused power.

It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses

323 buddy, same engine just a few diff things. 328 has a longer stroke , twin pipes going from the manifold to the back box and i think thats about it. 323 gets 170bhp 328 gets 193bhp. Throw a 328 exahust on m50 mani fold onto a 323 hey presto 200bhp+ with a remap.

the engine is a 2.5 but has a smaller inlet manifold to reduce the bhp for german tax reasons. I love the stright 6 sound. Thats why i prob only get 20mpg lol!

Oh yea the 328 may have an LSD mine has ACS traction control but its poo so i drive with it off

Oh cool, I always thought the 328i was actually a 2.8 and not a 2.5 but you learn something new everyday, although pretty sure I knew the 323i was a 2.5 M52

Didn't they do a 325i with an M50 engine in it? Is that the car you use the manifold from?

I'm also in love with the straight 6 sound, could never go back to a 4 pot!

the engine is a 2.8 but its the same engine just with a longer stroke have a look on wikipedia some great info. the m50's were the links of the e34 series if i remember right. Had a race with a green 318 lol she thought i was driving the same speed car lol was well funny. Its such a nice drive pulls like a steam train. 1st gear gets me to 45mph! then 2nd upto 64 laugh laugh Just need a diesel car now! Hate paying for the fuel for it but love the car!

What's the fuel economy on the 2.8?
I was thinking of getting another BMW but have been offered a Lexus GS300 so in-between?
I know the Lexus does 20mpg around town.

Al the 2.8 i've got is actually nearly a 2.9 mate log book shows it as 2799cc so it 1cc of a 2.8

Ste mine does about 23 - 25mpg, floor it and it does around 16mpg

It's been remapped though so drinks alittle more than the average i think by 5 - 7 mpg

Heres mine, i'm seriously considering selling this at moment, so anyone intrested let me know. Cost £36,000 new in 2001, 328 E46 with Remap on AC Shnizer springs, immaculate condition, business spec, parrot sqwaker handsfree, full leather, 2 door coupe

198bhp out the box but is more like 220bhp after remap 0-60 in about 5 seconds, quick for the weight of the car

Will see most cars off the road bar EVO's have smoked many a scooby sti, Vogue, Alfa T Sparks list goes on, Did get spanked by an R32 but in fairness they are 3.0 v6 carrying half the weight [Linked Image]

Mate i've been scouring aswell, only true way to prove performance will be for me to scan rolling road results from when the remap / tune was done.

I wouldn't take them figures as gosple i've just read three conflicting sets of specs bhp 176, bhp 196, bhp 260

Same on the z4, 0-6 as little as 4.9 some reporting 6.6

BMW Z4 2.5i performance

0-50 mph (80 km/h)
0-60 mph 6.60 s
0-100 km/h 7.00 s
0-100 mph 17.20 s
80-120 km/h (50-70 mph) in top
Standing ¼mile 15.00 s
@ 94.00 mph
Standing km 27.20 s
@ 192.00 km/h
Top speed 235 km/h (146 mph)
Power-to-weight ratio 141.57 bhp/ton

http://www.carspecsdirectory.com/BMW.htm

See below it reckons mines 400bhp out of box and quotes the z at 192?, bare in mind if you dont service and dont keep ontop of seals and valves you lose hp each year aswell, thats why i'm forever paying for services etc

Can post links to loads of different sites every single one contradicts the last

Clock goes up to 155 and some and have checked it against Tom Tom / road angel GPS to confirm

They are more accurate than you think mate, they have to be there or there abouts or the pigs could never press for speeding.

6.6 is BMW quoted figure and the one I see banded about the most.

The 3.0 is allegedly 5.9 so a Z4 will do it in 6, just not mine.

As mentioned though mate, it's literally come back from a tune / service yesterday with new boots so it's rocket powered at the moment, all ratio's have been changed through diagnostics and vanos timing has been altered

It's where we had his overfinch of the clock, proper tarmac landing strip, private land and if the car fish tails or decided to leave the road you can spin out safely

Certainly can mate, GSI redtops are little rockets, If we can get a crew of genuine petty heads who are interested we may be able to do a meet there given we give him enough notice and behave, one thing he is sensitive is fuel or oil leaking on the runway, fair point when you consider that planes actually do land there

Hoseman fixed my pipes. It did have a power steering leak but that's sorted.
Your bmws are well out my league, was baffled by the 325 I had last though as my gsi was quicker than that?

i've had a few of the E36's aswell Ste, was never overly impressed but they where all tiddlers, 316,318 and a 2.0 they felt quick to me then but its because i'd just swapped from a clio mk3, Parents had 2 Alpina's though and they where rapid got a pic somewhere mate, engines have come on alot since then though can't say i've ever driven a 328 though so can't comment, would have thought it was quick though ?

Just reading through this post and I was just wondering what ratios have been changed, and how you adjusted the vanos timing. Im aware how the system works, just curious as to how its timing can be adjusted wink

Also, is it a double vanos system on that car, or just single on the inlet?

Hi Stuey, from memory they altered the overlapping and something to do with altering the degree of rotation on the cam. Its double vanos, altering inlet and exhaut manifold, don't quote me on that but if you need actual details i can ask the chap that did it, getting to technical for me

Stuey i think this is what i was trying to explain

Double VANOS
************************************************** ***********

Double-VANOS (double-variable camshaft control) significantly improves torque since valve timing on both the intake and outlet camshafts are adjusted to the power required from the engine as a function of gas pedal position and engine speed.

On most BMW engines that use a single VANOS, the timing of the intake cam is only changed at two distinct rpm points, while on the double-VANOS system, the timing of the intake and exhaust cams are continuously variable throughout the majority of the rpm range.

With double-VANOS, the opening period of the intake valves are extended by 12 degrees with an increase in valve lift by 0.9 mm.
Double-VANOS requires very high oil pressure in order to adjust the camshafts very quickly and accurately, ensuring better torque at low engine speeds and better power at high speeds. With the amount of un-burnt residual gases being reduced, engine idle is improved. Special engine management control maps for the warm-up phase help the catalytic converter reach operating temperature sooner.

Double-VANOS improves low rpm power, flattens the torque curve, and widens the powerband for a given set of camshafts. The double-VANOS engine has a 450 rpm lower torque peak and a 200 rpm higher horsepower peak than single-VANOS, and the torque curve is improved between 1500 - 3800 rpm.
At the same time, the torque does not fall off as fast past the horsepower peak.
The advantage of double-VANOS is that the system controls the flow of hot exhaust gases into the intake manifold individually for all operating conditions. This is referred to as "internal" exhaust gas re-circulation, allowing very fine dosage of the amount of exhaust gas recycled.

While the engine is warming up, VANOS improves the fuel/air mixture and helps to quickly warm up the catalytic converter to its normal operating temperature. When the engine is idling, the system keeps idle speeds smooth and consistent thanks to the reduction of exhaust gas re-circulation to a minimum. Under part load, exhaust gas re-circulation is increased to a much higher level, allowing the engine to run on a wider opening angle of the throttle butterfly in the interest of greater fuel economy. Under full load, the system switches back to a low re-circulation volume providing the cylinders with as much oxygen as possible.

Cheers Nelzy - I know how it works, and what it does, I was just confused as to how its timing can be altered?

Did you mean its physically been moved to adjust the timing, or it just kicks in sooner? Its on a helical mecanical gear set, which is controlled by oil pressure to adjust it depending on speed / revs etc so Im pretty sure the VANOS point of advance / retardation can be adjusted, but to adjust the mecanical cam timing - I think the only way that can be done is by moving it a tooth out on the chain, which makes them run like poo lol

A couple of friends race E36 M3s - one non Evo (Single VANOS) and one E36 M3 EVO (Double Vanos), Ive also had an E36 M3 Evo, and I got really "in to" how it worked; compaired to the Honda VTEC system, when they had their engines rebuilt, hence why I was interested as to how the timing was adjusted wink

What ratios have to altered? Is that on the VANOS - can you change the helical gear set inside the Cam Sprockets?

Thanks Stuey, not too sure mate, i know altering the teeth does throw the timing out, and that the idle goes really lumpy, you sound like you know far more than me mate i'm unfortunatley not that technical which is iwhy i pay the mechanic a wedge to do it lol, I'll give him a shout and ask exactly what he did i'm sure it was a combination of physical minor adjustments and software flash, but you'd probably tell me more mate, will let you know asap

E36 or E46?

Driven both, and really like them. Looked at an E46 M3 before the Z but shat myself about the increased servicing costs with it being M.

To the best of my knowledge, right out of the box the E36 328i is faster than the E46 328 - probably due to power to weight etc.

All this talk of BMW is making me want another one, read up on the Lexus, but with a 0-60 of 7.3 and a top speed of 140 it's out the window, comfortable ride and quiet but @ 20Mpg from 225bhp I'd expect better performance. Oh & it's an auto which I don't really like.

Is it full auto or step ste?

I had manuals for years and swore i'd never have an auto, now i've got an auto / manual and never use it in manual unless i want to dictate the revs and where the gear change is.

I expect this car isn't really aimed at people like you/us.

It'll be comfortable wafting around, but it's a big old thing with a slushbox that you won't be able to chuck around much. Straight line speed doesn't necessarily excite me that much, which is why the Z4 is perfect, I reckon it punches well above it's weight on the track, particularly a twisty one.

Where did the 7.3 seconds to 60 come from? I think that sounds optimistic.

I need to dig out the RR printout for mine which if I remember rightly showed it at over 200 (it was remapped by DMS a couple of years ago but don't expect it'll make much difference on an NA engine - all it's done it make it feel a bit smoother. I'll also get 35mpg easy on a run.

Dynolicious had mine at 6.4 to 60 but I appreciate it's not perfect.

Looking forward to a disused airfield for sure!
