In recent years I have been sceptical about the ways the Ferries have been run, well I now humbly apologise .... look at these figures ....

Mersey Ferries £455,000 PROFIT
Mersey Tunnels £0 Profit
Merseyrail £92,669,000 LOSS

And they keep on talking about closing the ferries?

Are those figures correct think

I find it hard to believe that Merseyrail can continue to operate with nearly a 1 billion pound loss, especially when they where making a profit (which has been getting bigger) in previous years.

What was your source?

They only make a profit (or in this case less loss) when you take into account the massive £88M grant they get. This grant can't be taken into account when working out their true profit.

At one time the local council paid the rail grants but these days it is centralised.

BTW £92M is £0.1B (or £0.0001B in English)

I forgot to put the bus figures above...

MerseyBus £21,015,000 LOSS

Used to really get my wick up when they were threatening the ferries, the ferries loss was a tiny percentage of the trains, just that the trains were disguised by grants.

This might have something to do with it:

its part of the whole public transport system that local busses and train serices are subserdised by goverment grants. If there where no grants there would be no buss and train passes for the over 60s for a start. No cheap fares for school children on school busses, no cheap fares for students and so on. The list is endless

The travel concessions are separate to the above figures, the grant towards that from central government was a mere £6.5M out of a cost of £51.5M. Most of the travel concession have to be funded locally which is why many councils were jumping up and down when the government made certain concessions compulsory.

The concept of a train is supposed to be that in hauling a large number of people/weight it should be cheaper than smaller forms of transport. I have no idea where the money goes - the tickets are dear enough but then working out real costs - the tickets should be about 10 times dearer. Something is terribly wrong.

How come the Tunnels don't make a profit? Find that one hard to believe, it's probably an accounting ploy.
